Datch 2nd XV v Finchley 30th Sept 2017
Datchworth triumph after a back and forth match.
No-one could ever accuse this match of being boring. A swallow dive try that never was, a nigh on decapitation of Joe Richardson, Jake Ebohodaghe being body checked over the dead-ball line and mazey runs aplenty from both sides. This Match also saw the return of Pumbaa, all be it running touch rather than with ball in hand.
10-0 up after 10 minutes and Datchworth looked comfortable in this game, Finchley's heads had dropped. After an inspiring speech from their ex-captain, Finchley were re-invigorated, running fast and hard with ball in hand. top tackles from Joe Richardson and Matthieu Light prevented some of Finchley's best chances and the ball stealing exploits of Gymer were invaluable in getting possession back with Datchworth.
After Finchley pulled back to 12-10 it turned into a dingdong match with more back and forths than a tennis game. The sides exchanging points and the lead throughout the second half, before Datchworths defence proved to be the better seeing out the match 34-29.
An honourable mention has to go out to the day's captain, Kris Jones (Taff), whose offloading would not have looked out of place for the All-Blacks. Unfortunately, due to a lack of Kiwis on the pitch, his no-look passes instead were going to thin air! A leading candidate for D of the day had it not been for Jake's decision that a try in the corner would not be good enough and rather than grounding the ball he was checked over the dead-ball line by Finchley's 17-year-old fullback.
Considering the number of players stepping up to the plate after drop-outs midweek, this was a great performance with a thoroughly deserved result.
