Fantastic Squad Performance

1, 2, 3 SQUEEZE, 1, 2, 3 SQUEEZE 1, 2 3, ROSCO was the call in the huddle before the match called by Jo Pursey the captain. The boys wanted to put in a performance that Rosco the head coach would be proud of but who could not be there as he was recovering at home probably with his feet up in front of the fire, reading the Shooting Times and listening to an Alan Titchmarsh CD!

The team travelled to Harbury, a local rival and one that always provides a warm welcome, even though it is usually freezing when we play there. The team have never beaten Harbury (right back to the U7s) so it was going to be a tough call to win.
The team started positively and played simple rugby with many phases being completed with some strong rucking, quick ball and quick slick hands. Daventry dominated the opening minutes and went ahead quickly with a super move by Robbie Thom and a good conversion by Kieran Banks. The match continued in the same way with Daventry dominating the Scrum and winning many against the head with good pressure and good hooking by Sam Smith, Robert Randall towering above the Harbury forwards at the lineout and winning many against the head and big hits being made by many of the forwards in particular Tom Denny, Alex Huband, Josh Jordan and Callum who also picked the ball up from the back of a counter ruck on the halfway line and ran in a great individual try. Richard Holland made many breaks from the base of a ruck and gained many yards that gave the team momentum. The backs used the wing very well and Kibb Groves ran a great line to off load to George Denny who ran 30 yards down the left wing, handing off on his way and then had the presence of mind to score under the posts. Matthew played in the backs today and looked at home there and showed good hands and speed.

At half time Daventry were 28 nil up. Changes were made which had no effect on the team and soon Daventry scored again with a super try by Robbie Thom using the space created on the wing and using his pace to beat the defending team. Bailey came on and put in some great hits and Lewis Print came on as Hooker and had a strong game, diving on the ball when it was loose. Josh Smith had a stronger second half with some good tackles and securing of the ball.

Then all seemed to change. Daventry started to be penalised at the ruck and Harbury made their way up the pitch eventually converting pressure into points with a well worked try which was converted. Daventry were again penalised at the ruck much to the confusion of the team and another try was let in. Again more pressure from Harbury came, who to their credit never gave up, and some heroic defending by Daventry stopped another try.

Kieran Banks kicked well today at conversions and also out of hand. He also ran straight lines and gave good ball to the centres and if less ball had been spilled then Daventry would have surely ran in more tries. Angus Taylor had a good game at Scrum Half and there was a welcomed return to William Russell on his return to the team and who did the prematch warm up in the changing room which could be heard by all outside. Callum showed good rugby skills with his decision making and quick hands, Ollie played a blinder on the wing and Josh came on at the end and did not look like he had only started playing the game recently.

A very good performance by the boys today who showed great character and by the noise level of the 2 sets of 3 cheers in the changing room thoroughly enjoyed their first ever win over Harbury.

The backs award went to Kieran Banks who stepped up to the mark today and ran the backs, the forwards went to Callum for a powerful performance and for scoring his first try, of many no doubt, for Daventry and the Dead Parrot went to Sam Smith who forgot his club tie (as he did on tour but got away with it!)

Well done boys, you did us proud today and you proved how good you can be. Let’s take that performance into the cup match against Long Buckby next week.
