Daventry fall to Newman debut goal

A debut goal from former Wellingborough Town striker Jake Newman was enough to condemn Daventry Town to their third consecutive defeat at the hands of Spalding United at Communications Park on Tuesday.

Newman has been scoring plenty of goals in the UCL Premier Division with Wellingborough Town.
He scored 36 times for the Doughboys last season and had already scored 18 times in 11 appearances this season, making him the UCL’s leading marksman before signing for Spalding United last week.
Daventry were without midfielders Barry Deacon, Robert Prinzel and winger Kieron Fitzgerald because of injury but welcomed back Adam Confue and Jason Lee to the starting line –up alongside new signing Manny Soetan who made a brief appearance as a substitute at Goole last Saturday.

As well as debutant Newman Tulips Manager Pat Rayment also gave a debut to experienced midfielder David Bell who signed for Spalding from Stamford but lists Coventry City, Norwich City, Luton Town, Rushden & Diamonds and Notts County among his former clubs.
Bell also played for King’s Lynn Town last season but once commanded a fee of around £500,000 when Norwich City signed him from Coventry City.

Former Kettering Town winger Josh Moreman wasted the Tulips first strike on goal, firing high over the crossbar from a good position in front of goal after 15minutes.
Midfielder Sam Murphy had a fine strike low to the ground held by Daventry keeper Ben Heath minutes later.
A sustained spell of pressure from the Tulips ended with big money signing Newman hitting his shot high over bar when he should really have tested Heath in the Daventry goal.
Newman scored his debut goal on 26minutes after he received a pass from Dan Bannister to drill the ball past Heath to score what proved to be the only goal of the game.

Having gone behind Daventry began to play some neat passing football but they were ineffective in front of goal having very few shots on goal until the final minutes.
Dan Childs made a crucial tackle on Niake Rodney when the forward was clean through on goal and Daventry breathed another sigh of relief when Sam Murphy headed against the bar from a corner on the hour mark.

Substitute Tom Walmsley shrugged off his marker and smashed a curling shot narrowly over the crossbar and Heath made another desperate save from Walmsley with his feet, blocking the ball out for a corner.
Spalding players appealed every decision loudly which can sometimes influence officials, Daventry players are sometimes too quiet out on the pitch!

Frustration began to appear with both Joe Curtis and Adam Confue being booked within the space of five minutes.
Daventry had very few shots on goal during the first sixty minutes but took the game to Spalding in the last thirty.
Adam Creaney smashed a shot into the side netting and Dan Childs forced a brilliant save from Tulips keeper Michael Duggan in his top right hand corner, turning his goalbound header away for a corner in the final minute denying Daventry a late equaliser.

On Saturday Daventry Town are in FA Trophy action at Coalville Town who have already beaten Daventry by 5-0 earlier in the season.
Daventry Town Manager Darran Foster will be looking for more strikes on goal if his side are to progress in this competition.
The winners go to Sutton Coldfield Town in the next round.
