“Excellent victory a real team effort. A great reward for all the hard work over the season and the huge amount of work put in by Mike over the years ably supported this season by Eric and Bruce.”
After wins over Highland and Madras, the U15 team booked a trip to St Andrews for Caledonia finals day with a match against Howe of Fife.
The match kicked off with Deeside playing into a very strong wind. Deeside were pinned back for most of the half by a strong Howe team but they only had one successful penalty to show for their possession to go into half time with a 3-0 lead.
With the wind behind them in the second half, Deeside came out the blocks quickly to get their first try, 5-3. The game ebbed and flowed with some continuing strong defence and some great attacking moves from Deeside which eventually resulted in a second unconverted try, 10-3. Still a one try came and 10 minutes to go, so lots of nervous pacing up and down the touch line from Mike and Eric and growing nerves from the large Deeside crowd.
But we shouldn't have worried, the boys came through with a final try in the last play of the game which was converted resulting in great scenes of celebration all round with a 17-3 victory. At last Mike could relax with a smile.
A very hard came with several bumps which saw the full bench being used as injury replacements and not just tactical substitutions. All the boys played really well with some ferocious tackling on some huge lads in defence and spirited attacking moves. The non-aligned spectators enjoyed the quality of the rugby played.
