Last Match Thrashing!
Bare Eleven Again!
The last match of the season for Delabole Utd AFC was the re-arranged away match to Grampound Reserves and not for the first time this season travelled with only the bare eleven players!
With The Slaters only just having a team, some of which were carrying injuries so damage limitation was needed, but the home side made the perfect start in the 15th minute going 1-0 up and made it 3-0 at halftime, 2 of the goals were fortunate ones, so Delabole could feel a little aggrieved at this. One of the bright spots was Daniel Van Nuil providing a good outlet on the right side of the midfield, having an effort cleared away from the goal in the process.
Shortly after halftime Grampound scored their 4th goal, 4-0. Delabole were awarded a corner in the 52nd minute which Glen Burrell ran up to take and swung his right foot to send the ball clean over the keeper and into the goal, his 15th goal of the season. This seemed to spur The Slaters on and were starting to gain some momentum and had several other corners but without the same outcome. The home side scored two more in quick succession making it 6-1 in the 70th minute. They were then awarded a penalty five minutes later which their authoritarian player/manager decided to take (it was the fastest he moved all day), Ashley Morris got his finger tips to it but not enough to stop it, 7-1. Then Dan Van Nuil meandered into the Grampound 18 yard box with the ball, only to be brought down, Penalty! Dan stepped up to take the penalty himself and duly converted it, his first ever goal for Delabole Utd AFC! 7-2 Fulltime.
After the match the travelling team and supporters gathered onto the party bus hired especially for the game for a winding trip back to Delabole visiting many hostelries on the way!
A disappointing end to the season which for the majority of times promised much but faltered flatly. Hopefully next season we will be able to capitalise and learn from this and come back stronger both physically and mentally plus a much more settled side which does help in the push for promotion and glory.
