That old Evans magic does the trick for Della

Cumbrian side Uppper Eden were the latest visitors to Lancaster Road in this weeks league fixture. This was a much anticipated match up as Upper Eden are renowned for playing open rugby, and there has been a good relationship between the two clubs over the years. The conditions for the game were perfect and Della had a sizable crowd to offer support,Upper Eden looked a much changed side from last time the two clubs met,and also Della were forced yet again to field a much changed side with inspirational player coach Lee McCormick unavailable and tight head prop Stuart Mills injured, the re jig of the team saw evergreen Jimmy Evans move from centre to stand off and Chris Sloan coming in at prop, but as i have stated many times this season the changes did`nt unbalance the Della side.
The final score in this game did not reflect the the actual and physical way this game unfolded such was the amount of tries that Della scored i would be here until next week going through each individual score. As it was i felt like Carol Vorderman before she left Countdown trying to keep up with the score board, i was like some kind of embittered statistician such was the amount of tries the Della scored, what i will say is that Carol just has the edge in the good looking stakes. The final out come had no reflection on the opening twenty minutes,Upper Eden straight fom the kick off rolled Della back on their heels with a superb display off running attacking rugby that had Della scrambling to defend, and although Della were holding out they were having to work extremely hard to stay in the game in the early exchanges, such was the quality of the Upper Eden play, they looked like the side who would open the scoring. This situation was doing nothing at all for my digestive tract, my bile was rising and i did`nt know wheather to run to the shop for a packet of rennies or watch the rest of the first half.Della however are made of sterner stuff and weathered the early onslaught and under the tutelage of Captain Paul Berry Della began to get a grip on the game, and on twenty five minutes with Jimmy Evans pulling the strings in midfield Della began to find gaps in the Eden defence and once fullback Joe White had crossed for Della`s first try the outcome was never in doubt. Two more tries in the first half from second row Sam Pitt and the mercurial Jimmy Evans put Della in the driving seat .
When the second half got under way Upper Eden yet again went onto the offensive, and for five minutes if you had just arrived at the game you would have thought that they were in the lead, However that man Evans began yet again to pull the strings in midfield this allied to a great peformance from the Della forwards allowed Della to go looking for the try that would give them the bonus point, Della did not just secure the bonus point but went on to score five tries in the second half with no reply from Upper Eden,Even although Eden were under the cosh they never deviated from their game plan and ran every ball much to the delight of the sizable crowd who`s sound attenuation must have upset the neighbours.Della scored eight tries in total to give a final score of 48-0,Such was the margin of success from the Della we at one stage were clearing a helicopter landing area for UNICEF to bring in medics to treat the Cumbian troops for post traumatic stress disorder.
The final score does not tell the full story of this game Upper Eden are a fine side and obviously had selection problems for this game, their work ethic and style of play does them great credit and i am sure that sticking to their principles will eventually pay dividends.
The Della try scorers were Joe White,Sam Pitt,Jimmy Evans,Kieran Cooper and Nick Petrou who bagged four tries. There were so many fine performances from Della in this game the forwards to a man could have all won the man of the match plaudits the backs also gave a dazzling display of amateur rugby, but it took a stellar performance to steal the laurel headdress from stand off Jimmy Evans but young Nick Petrou did just that in scoring four tries to win the man of the match for Della. The whole of the Upper Eden side should be applauded for their approach to this game and one player for them stood out, their flanker number six who had a great game. And lastly words of praise for seventeen year old Jay Boyd who came on for Della to make his first team debut with ten moinutes to go at stand off, and in a great cameo laid the foundations for Nick Petrou`s last two tries.
