Della`s backs too much for Moor

Della made the short journey to take on Heaton Moor at Green lane, with Della looking to get back to winning ways after last weeks defeat to Fleetwood. The Della side was yet again changed with Chris Petrou returning to the second row and player coach Lee McCormick coming in at stand off after recovering from injury.
The Heaton Moor side looked to have a fielded a side that was on the big side and this did not bode well for Della in the tight, because it would take a seismic shift of excessive continental drift proportions for Della to be considered a scrummaging side.
And from the kick off the scrum would prove to be a problem area for Della,Moor started the brighter of the two sides putting Della under some early pressure but one of Dellas core attributes is its resolute defence and all Moor could garner for their early efforts was a penalty to give them an early lead 3-0.Della were not too worried about the early pressure from Moor as you would expect any team playing at home to show some early promise, and it was`nt long before Della were battling back up field to win a penalty for Chris Petrou to level the scores 3-3.In the first twenty minutes although Moor were having the better of the scrums and probably shading the line out possession Della were far the better team in the loose, the Della pack were battering holes in
the Moor defence and in hindsight might have slightly over done the forward involvement and given the backs earlier ball, because it was obvious that when the Della back line got hold of the ball they were causing the Moor defence untold problems.Della though to their credit were knocking on the home sides door through their dominant forward play in the loose, then on thirty minutes stand off Lee McCormick raced through a gap twenty metres out from the Moor line and put a peach of a pass into his fullback Nick Petrou`s hands for Nick to score close to the posts brother Chris added the extras 3-10.But it was to be the scrum that would let Della down again Della were forcing errors from the Moor ball carriers with their rock solid defence but when scrums were awarded to Della this was of no advantage at all to the Salford side, this area of the game was like the abode of the dead for Della such was the dearth of ball won in these situations, this said Della were doing well with the possession they had in hand ,but it would be Moor who would score next when awarded a penalty in kickable range they opted for the three points rather than line and drive and take on the Della defensive line but they managed to close the gap just before the half time whistle 6-10.
Della started the second half poorly when the kick off failed to go ten metres,Moor opted for the kick again but this also failed to go the distance, now Moor opted for a scrum and this gave them the start of a purple patch of play that put Della on the back foot for fifteen minutes, although the Della line held firm and Moor could`nt find any way through they were awarded two penalties in kickable range which they gladly accepted to give them the lead 12-10.Della now with their pride stung moved up a gear, with the forwards leading the way Della were smashing holes in the Moor defence and at last realised the impact of giving their backs early ball, that they would be able to stretch the home defence to breaking point. The Della stand off now for the first time in the game was having the amount of ball that would let him show what his backs were made off, and stand off McCormick had such an abundance of cherries at his disposal that it was hard to chose which one he would pick, however he chose to go down the orthodox wide route and rely on the out right pace that his wide men possessed, then with twenty minutes of the half gone and the Della forwards yet again in control in the loose the ball was whipped down the line to winger Sean Watson to outpace the cover and race into the corner to regain the lead for Della, Petrou could`nt add the extras 12=15.The lead though was slender and Della needed more,,and the Della pack answered the call with the back row leading the way they yet again powered their way through the Moor pack to give McCormick a platform to launch the backline he decided it worked once,so yet again quick hands and Sean Watson dived over for his second, Petrou this time added the extras 12-22.Now with time running out Della urged on by captain Paul Berry went looking for the bonus point try and it almost came off, but twice Della put the ball down when the line was at their mercy. This was a much improved performance from Della but we still have a way to go to regain our early season form but the signs are there that we are getting there.
The Della man of the match was Sam Pitt who had a great game at number eight .Moor to their credit put up a resolute display and they can take many positives from this game for Moor their scrum half had a good game and kept his pack going all afternoon.
Many thanks to Moor for their hospitality and to Kirky and David for their post match company.
