Season Review Part 1

August 2014

United went in their first season in the County Senior League in confident mood, perhaps too confident. A good pre-season and the success of the 2013/14 season indicated that the team might be one of the stronger teams in our new surroundings. Unfortunately opening day visitors Parkgate had other ideas and came to Old Road and won 4-3. Another home game saw further points dropped when Kiveton Park visited Old Road and drew 0-0, 1 point from 2 home games not being what was expected. The month did finish on a better note though as victories, 4-3 away over Bawtry Town after being 3-1 down and 3-0 against Sheffield Lane Top at Old Road boosted the morale of the team somewhat.

September 2014
The new month started with a 3-0 win over Treeton Terriers though that team folded soon after and their results were expunged. We then hosted the first Denaby derby when over 300 people attended Old Road to see a thrilling 2-2 draw with Denaby Main in which United led early in the second period before being behind 2-1 and goal machine Steve Ellor popping up late on to grab an equaliser to ensure a share of the points. The Reds only win of this month saw a nervy performance against Frecheville Reserves and it took a last minute winner from Ellor to grab all 3 points in a 1-0 win which was perhaps undeserved.

September finished with yet another home game meaning the team had played 6 home games to only one away, this time Caribbean Sports came to town and raced into a 2-0 half time lead before a second half comeback earned United a point in a 2-2 draw which included an absolute peach of a free kick from Martin Lawton to drag United level. At this stage early league leaders Byron House were sweeping everyone aside and seemed sure to dominate top spot with everyone else fighting for the other places as 8 successive victories took them well clear though Denaby Main were starting the season well having dropped only 5 points from their 8 games.

October 2014
United started October with a Sheffield Association Cup match when neighbours Yorkshire Main came to Old Road, the different cup competitions were to provide some highlights to United’s season and Yorkshire Main were dispatched 2-1 though not without a scare as goals from Neil Spruce and Steve Ellor proved to be enough to stave off a determined fight back from Yorkshire Main as they came back strongly from a 2-0 half time deficit.

The first league game of this month was to prove to be the team’s most controversial game of the season so far when Shaw Lane Aqua Force Reserves came to Old Road. In a game that started well there was no hint of the trouble to come when just before the break with the score at 0-0 the referee gave a penalty to the visitors when the Reds should clearly have had a free kick of their own. Some United players lost their discipline over this decision and showed serious dissent to the referee with the result that United went down to 9 men with Ryan Scott & Ashley Cantrill shown red cards. With the penalty dispatched and United down to 9 men they also faced a second half 1-0 down. Many teams in that position would have felt sorry for themselves and other players might have also lost discipline and got themselves into trouble but the 9 supermen (and the 3 subs who were used), because that’s what they were, gave a second half display that could only be described as OUTSTANDING as they fought back with goals from Jack Whittaker and Paul Hemmingway to win 2-1.

A disjointed fixture list which had seen 7 home games against only 1 away saw the team make a visit to league leaders Byron House to end the month, the table toppers still looked the team to beat but were no longer unbeatable after suffering league and cup defeats to our neighbours Denaby Main however a disappointing display saw the team lose 3-1 with only an effort from Liam Winfield giving any comfort leaving the Reds in a disappointing 7th place in the league table.
