February 2015 To Season End

February 2015
With the weather and cup commitments meaning United hadn’t played a league fixture in 10 weeks they had dropped down the league table finding themselves only 4 places from the bottom so a good run of results was essential to begin the climb up the table. Bawtry Town came to Old Road with United winning 5-1 though the performance wasn’t the best, goals from Ellor (3), Finney and Redfern earning the points. A 3-1 Doncaster Challenge Cup quarter final victory over a youthful MLB Academy was overshadowed by a red card for each side, worryingly this was United’s 6th red card of the season.

Having drawn 0-0 with Kiveton Park earlier in the season United travelled for the return fixture and won 3-2 though the result was almost thrown away after earlier leading 3-0 with goals from Ellor (2) and Whittaker. February proved to be a good month for the Reds as they remained unbeaten and chalked up further victories over Parkgate 3-2, this victory included a superb 35 yard strike from Martin Lawton and New Bohemains were overcome 4-0 though yet again player indiscipline saw a United player sent off in each game. Leading scorer Steve Ellor was in the middle of a great run of form, taking his goal tally for the season up 18 as the Reds were finally starting to climb the table moving up to 7th place with a few games in hand over teams above them.

March 2015
A five match winning run came to an end when United travelled to promotion rivals Caribbean Sports, in an extremely intimidating atmosphere in which the hosts were aggressive to both the Reds and the referee United lost 2-1 despite yet another Ellor goal. This defeat was to prove the last league defeat of the season as United played a further 3 games during March winning all 3 and scoring 15 goals in the process. Frecheville Reserves were the first to suffer as United travelled to Sheffield and spanked them 5-0 with yet another treble from Ellor plus goals from Finney and Gedney. United were to play Maltby Main Reserves in 2 successive games and won each of them 5-1 with another 5 goals from Ellor over the 2 games as well Hill, Gedney and Finney finding the target.

April 2015
The good run of results over February and March had seen United surge up the table to 4th and on the first Saturday of April they entertained long time leaders Byron House whose form had dropped away alarmingly. Knowing a win would put the Reds in the driving seat over their visitors in the race for promotion United put the Sheffield side to the sword in a 4-1 victory with goal machine Ellor grabbing all 4. Two other games followed meaning United would play 3 games in 5 days, on Easter Monday Hemsworth MW from the Doncaster Senior League came to Old Road in the semi final of the Doncaster FA Challenge Cup. Fierce rivals from our own time in that League the Reds triumphed 4-2 though yet another stupid red card, this time for Finney spoilt the day somewhat though the reward for winning was playing the final at Doncaster Rovers keepmoat stadium. 48 hours later United were in action again and beat Worsbrough Bridge 2-0 though despite dominating for large parts United kept everyone on edge and needed 2 late goals to get the points and they actually topped the table for a short while before neighbours Denaby Main would play their games in hand and overtake the Reds at the summit.

The top 2 places in the league seemed destined to fought over by Caribbean Sports and Denaby Main and with Byron House having completed their fixtures and only 1 point ahead, United knew that 3 points from their remaining 2 games would guarantee promotion. With only 1 defeat in 11 games they achieved that target in the first of these fixtures after a comprehensive 5-1 win at Sheffield Lane Top with goals from Hemmingway (2) Ellor, Skelton and Russon. This brought United to their last league game of the season and a date with champions elect Denaby Main who needed 1 point to win the title. A large crowd saw United take the lead with Ellors 35th goal of a great personal season for the striker but Main equalised with a goal 10 minutes from time to get the point they needed to claim the league title which they added to their County Association Cup triumph of 2 weeks earlier.

May 2015
United’s final match of a promotion winning season came in the Doncaster FA Challenge Cup Final where they played Sutton Rovers, their opponents in a 6-1 United win in last season’s final. A desire to defend the trophy was further enhanced with the final being played at the Keepmoat Stadium, home of Doncaster Rovers. Despite the occasion the Reds put in a lack lustre performance for 70 minutes having to come from behind 3 times, added to that was the red card shown to Paul Hemmingway, 3-3 at 90 minutes and a man short Steve Ellor came up with a crucial winner in extra time to ensure United retained the trophy.
