Denbigh Town Reserves came back from 2 goals down against a very strong Flint side.
Town, looking to cement their place in 3rd spot in the table travelled to Flint on the back of an excellent 2-0 away win against Conwy, but soon found themselves up against a very strong Flint side, determined to avenge the 6-2 defeat inflicted by town in their previous meeting. In a first half that contained few chances, Johnny Slater went closest for Denbigh, just hitting over the bar after good link up play with Niall McGuinness. Denbigh looked solid at the back throughout the first half with the back 4 playing exceptionally well and debutant goalkeeper Gethin Williams producing a couple of excellent saves. This ensured the teams were deadlocked at the break.
The second half saw town look to play a more expansive game in the hunt for a first goal. This opened the game up, and eventually saw Flint take the lead with a goal from a corner to make it 1-0. Town pressed forward in search of an equaliser but some good work through the Flint midfield saw them score a second goal that looked to put the game beyond Denbigh. This seemed to kick start Denbigh who began to play at a much higher tempo, but with 10 minutes to go it looked as if Flint would take all 3 points. Then some excellent play down the Denbigh left saw the ball fall to Gareth Roberts
who finished with his left foot. Denbigh then continued to press in search of an equaliser, and in the last minute an excellent run from Darren Nixon
saw him brought down in the penalty area, that offered Denbigh the chance to salvage a point. Niall McGuinnes coolly slotted the spot kick to claim his 15th goal of the season.
Manager Matthew Jones had this to say "Flint had a very strong side out today so we knew it was going to be tough. I was very impressed with our defensive performance in the first half. In the second half we decided to go for the win, but this opened us up and Flint took advantage of that. The character and attitude shown by this very young side was immense, they never gave up and never deviated from our philosophy, overall I am very happy with the way we conducted our selves in the second half"
