It was a new look Denbigh team that took the field in the first friendly at Corwen under the new management team of Matty Jones and Dewi Llion. It gave the managers a chance to see their new squad in action following some hard training sessions in the heat of the last few weeks.
A draw was a fair result in a competitive game with both teams looking to impress their managers on a cool summers evening. Denbigh’s men took time to adjust to their new team mates and it was Corwen who started the brighter. They went ahead on 20 minutes following a goal mouth scramble and Iorwerth Jones was on hand to slot the ball past Town’s keeper.
The second half saw Town take a better shape with a lot more possession of the ball. New signings Ross Weaver and Scott McHarrie were industrious in midfield, both showing deft touches and playing clever passes. Curtis Langton and Tony Davies looked solid at the back as they looked to form a new central defence partnership. Davies is starting his third spell at the club and it was from a Town corner that he jumped higher than the Corwen defenders to head home early into the second half to make it 1-1.
Defender Miles Todd was putting in some crunching tackles in right back whilst Bailey Jackson on the left showed confidence on the ball, along with a trialist who slotted in well on the left flank.
Local players Mark Roberts, Jake Walker and Rhys Llwyd worked hard in their roles all of them putting in tireless efforts with all three of them having opportunities to score but being foiled by Corwen keeper Dylan Jones who made some excellent saves in the second half.
Further local players were introduced in the second half with both Sam Cartwright and 17 year old Sion Jones making impressive contributions. Cartwright showed some electric speed at times and was unlucky not to score on two occasions whereas young Jones made some excellent passes and long balls together with putting in some strong challenges. Definitely a player for the future.
The game was a valuable lesson for the management team as they assemble their new team and were able to assess individual performances. Several new signings were unavailable on the night and further signings are to be made over the next few weeks.
