Young Reserves Give New Manager Dream Start
This was a new era for the Reserve team in more ways than one. With Kev Roberts taking charge as manager for his first game, there was a noticeably youthful look to the side with no less than four sixteen year-olds involved. There also was a return home for Andy Thomas who had recently returned to Central Park after a brief stint with Llandyrnog United.
As the game began in driving rain it was the young Denbigh lads who took control with a passing game which exuded confidence and class. The only surprise in the first half was that it took until the 43rd minute for the deadlock to be broken as Andy Thomas was up-ended in the box and smashed home the resulting penalty. Almost straight from the re-start the Llanrug defence was carved open by great wing-play from Sam Cartwright and his cross was converted by Thomas for his second in as many minutes. Half-time: Denbigh 2 Llanrug 0.
The second half consisted of more of the same as the Denbigh team played neat football and Llanrug desperately tried to get a grip on procedings. The almost inevitable third goal wasn't long in arriving as the Cartwright & Thomas combination came up trumps again as Sam played a delightful through-ball for Andy to strike home and claim his hat-trick. However, Llanrug weren't about to lie down and die, as a long ball wasn't dealt with by the young Denbigh back-line and the 'Rug striker smashed it home to reduce the arrears. The game went slightly off the boil for 20 minutes with neither side able to control possession. However, on 83 minutes it was a superb defence-splitting pass from the ever-classy Sam Tate that put Thomas clean through and he didn't give the goalkeeper any hope as he rifled it into the corner of the net for his and Town's fourth goal. Credit to Llanrug though as they kept pressing forward and claimed another goal in injury time. Result: Denbigh 4 Llanrug 2.
Overall this was a great team display from such a young side and in Andy Thomas they possess a real clinical edge up front. Manager Roberts was understandably delighted with the performance and credited his coaching team of John Roberts and Gaz Hughes as well as the players. The Reserves' next game is away at Rhyl FC on Friday 29th September at 19:30.
