U14s Undefeated Double Champions
The pressure was of before this match as Denbigh knew they were to be crowned League winners after the final whistle but what a fantastic game of football to finish the campaign - end to end stuff throughout.
Runners up Dyserth had ideas of ruining the party and had clear thoughts on winning this. The match strategy was to contain Denbigh whilst playing down the slope and to the visitor's surprise their danger man Ricci Thomas had moved to centre back. The plan worked and Thomas was soon in action blocking the balls that were aimed at the Reds' forwards. When the visitors did get through Dyserth's keeper made some outstanding saves particularly from winger Gruff Roberts. As has been the norm of late Dyserth took the lead within quarter of an hour. The slightest hesitation in defence allowed Harrison Cunnah to pounce and run through to score. Denbigh retaliated on twenty three minutes with some slick passing and when the ball reached the reliable Ifan Jones he took it forward and finished the move off in style. Denbigh really needed a few more goals before half time as they knew the second period would be a different game. With five minutes to go Corey Wynne charged down a clearance and ran on to block a second effort before the ball squirmed free to Jones. A clever body swerve and he had the space to place a sweet left footer low past the diving keeper. 2 - 1 to Denbigh at half time.
Dyserth attacked in the second half urged on by Thomas who had, as expected , crept forward. It was Denbigh who nearly scored again though and a cracking effort from Ashley Andrews brought off a top drawer save. Wynne also hit the bar before Dyserth shaved the post the other end. Dyserth wanted this game and they finally got the goal they deserved when Sam Lloyd scored a header from a corner. 2-2 . Bongi Mashaba was very unlucky to see his header crash off the bar to deny him the winner with ten minutes left. Cheered on by the crowd Dyserth attacked continuously thereafter and came close on two more occasions. After another attack and with the referee checking his watch Denbigh punted the ball upfield. When Wynne brought down the headed clearance he only had one thing on his mind. Two quick steps forward and he hit a screamer into the top left hand corner. A spectacular goal ! 3- 2 on the last kick of the game. A fantastic end to the match and a fitting end to a fantastic season for Denbigh - League and Cup champions.
Manager Stephen Whitfield said afterwards " I am very pleased for the players. Looking back, the needless seven week lay off before our NWCFA cup defeat at Porthmadoc did us no favours and I would like to have another real go again. I must say we are deserving winners of the League title scoring over one hundred times in fifteen league matches and conceeding only eighteen goals. Winning the Rhyl district League Cup at Belle Vue too was a very thrilling day. They are a great team "
