Denbigh are u15 Champions !
The final game provided end to end entertainment at the Rec last Wednesday evening as the youngsters played host to Abergele u16s.
Both teams used the whole of the pitch to pass the ball around and seemed evenly matched as they each tried to carve out openings at goal. Denbigh broke the deadlock on eleven minutes after Gele failed to clear a curling corner kick from the left allowing central defender Daf Montgomery to pounce and smash in his first goal of the season. Ten minutes later it was all even as the visiting centre forward collected a through ball and struck a low shot to the far post past Denbigh's Iwan Johnson. Excellent wing play from both teams created half chances both ends but the score remained one each at the break.
Denbigh swopped things around a little in the second period to give the whole squad time on the pitch although the quality of play was not affected. Abergele had slightly more possession and took the lead with a fine headed goal. Corey Wynne had been introduced up front to pressure the defenders with his speed and strength and it was his pass to Adam Jones that allowed the team captain to find the net and draw level. With twenty minutes left Abergele took the lead. Denbigh were not done though and poured forward at every opportunity. Gruff Roberts had been moved to left back but his trademark runs upfield and pinpoint crosses continued to cause real problems for the visitors. The equalizer came with ten minutes left after Roberts' cross found Ifan Jones who hit a sweet low drive goalwards. The keeper parried the shot but only as far as Wynne who lifted the ball over him and into the gaping goal. 3 - 3 . Wynne came close two more times and after it appeared he was pushed over for the upteenth time by a defender Montgomery protested too much and was sent off, possibly a little harshly, for his second yellow card of the day with minutes remaining before the end of the game and the season. The score remained 3 - 3 at the whistle.
Afterwards the delighted Denbigh players lined up to be presented by an official with the u15 League winners shield.
