A mid season message from the club chairman, Peter Coulson

Welcome back to the second half of the season, which is going to be important for our club in several ways.

First of all, we will be hoping for some strong results as we move through the return matches, and the early signs are promising. Despite two losses for the Firsts they were both encouraging performances and there is a strong sense of purpose and determination in the squad which certainly paid off with a superb result against Wellington. This sense of spirit seems to be reflected amongst many of the other teams too.

Secondly, we are looking at plans to develop the club’s facilities. It is early days yet with a long way to go – not least of which will be raising a sizable sum of money - but watch out for more on this as plans progress. I hope to be able to provide more detail by the AGM, on 26 June this year.

Also of importance for the second half of this season is going to be addressing our volunteer base. Quite simply, the club is run by volunteers, whether on one of the three committees or, for example, running the club house, providing the catering or putting in many hours of coaching. All of these people dedicate a huge amount of time for either you or your children to enjoy their rugby experience to a high standard. This can only work if we get broader, ad hoc volunteering to help with things like transport, catering or organising social events. In some areas I have been disappointed to see more and more falling onto those that already do so much – so please, at least once or twice a season, ask yourself what you can do for your club and step up; because these volunteers do it all for you.

In a similar vein, we will soon be losing our club treasurer. This is not an onerous task, so do give it some serious thought. If I cannot find a replacement by the AGM the Club will have no choice but to close until a new volunteer comes forward.

We have several Wednesday and Friday evening games coming up, why not come along and support these, whether you are in the seniors, youth or ladies divisions of the Club. Being a part of the whole club is essential to our ethos and continued growth. Talking of which, we aim to have a senior ladies side playing next season, so we are beginning a campaign to bring women to the Rectory to train and play. This campaign will be launched at the RN vs Albion Ladies game at the Rectory on 19 February. Do attend if you can and, more importantly, bring along any potential players for the new DSRFC ladies’ side.

Two further dates for your diary are: the Annual Club Dinner on Saturday 10th May; and the Army vs Navy game on Saturday 3 May, with our very own DSRFC Under 11s playing in the curtain raiser before and possibly at Half Time – so even more reasons to make the trip to Twickenham for what is always a great day out.

That’s all from me – as ever, if you have ideas, criticism or praise, please catch me at the Rectory on most Saturday afternoons and let me know your views about your club.
