Didcot 2-1 Redditch
Goals from McNish and Reid make it 3 in a row for Diddy
Didcot Town made it 3 pre-season wins in a row with a confident display against Southern Premier League side Redditch United on Saturday. Despite falling behind the Railwaymen claimed the victory thanks to first half goals from Callum McNish and George Reid.
The Railwaymen were still without goalkeeper Leigh Bedwell and defender Luke Carnell for this game so it meant Matt Crowther continued in goal and there were also 1st starts in pre-season for Lance Williams, George Reid, Lewis Hayden and Morgan Williams.
After a fairly non eventful but watchable opening it was the visitors who took the lead when a shot from the left hand side was only parried by Crowther and it was duly converted from close range to give Rediditch the lead with pretty much their first meaningful attack of the game.
Didcot responded well with some neat play down the left hand side involving McNish and Woodley but the left back’s cross evaded the red shirts in the box.
It wasn’t long though before Didcot did find their equaliser when more good play down the left hand side saw the ball crossed to McNish who powered his way into the box, his first attempt was blocked but if fell back to the midfielder who poked the ball in at the second attempt.
The 1-1 scoreline became 2-1 with Didcot’s next attack as again the impressive McNish was proving too powerful for his Redditch counterparts and his low shot from the edge of the box was spilled by the Redditch goalkeeper allowing George Reid to follow up and score from 6 yards out.
Half Time Didcot 2-1 Redditch
Into the 2nd half and the main activity were the substitutions made by the hosts as the impressive McNish, Lewis Hayden and Lance Williams made way for Sam Barder, Seth Humphries and Ollie Thomas. David Murphy replaced Barcelos in attack, Matt Woodley was replaced by Cameron McNeill and youngsters James Tanner and Brett Gardner replaced Morgan Williams and George Reid as Didcot rang the changes.
Murphy came closest to adding to the score when Gardner put in an excellent ball in but the forward put his header just wide. Humphries then played an excellent ball through to Murphy whose stinging shot was brilliantly saved as Didcot looked to try and add to their tally.
The final change was made in goal as Crowther was replaced by Josh Bateman but the youngster was relatively untroubled late on as Didcot held on without incident to their 3rd pre-season win in succession.
The good news was doubled after the game as Lance Williams was the latest player to put pen to paper signing on for the Railwaymen for next season.
Next up for Didcot is the short trip to Milton United on Tuesday evening. 7:45pm kick off.
