Annual club dinner - report & update
Didsbury Toc H launched the Brick Appeal for the Didsbury Playing Fields charity at our annual dinner last weekend.
The Brick Appeal aims to raise funds to help prevent the local playing fields and clubhouse, which are used by a number of different sports, from flooding.
Toc H have been playing rugby on the fields at the bottom of Ford Lane for over 80 years. The Environment Agency has increased flood levels meaning water will rise several feet higher and could flow through the clubhouse, potentially making the facilities unusable.
With significant grants principally from the Environment Agency, Rugby Football Union, Football Association and English Cricket Board, nearly all the money has been found to raise the clubhouse up a level and modernise the out-of-date facilities. They now have to raise the final £50,000.
The annual dinner raised £7,400 which was a fantastic boost to the fundraising with a significant contribution by sponsors Francis Alexander Solicitors. As well as making a donation of £3,000 on the night and donating auction prizes, Principal Solicitor Alex Speed, a former referee and coach, brought a brick in memory of his father, Rudy, who also played for the club. He is pictured with Jeff Burn, the club President, promoting the scheme.
“It’s an organisation that’s close to my heart both through myself as a former player as well as my late father, Rudy, who was a player and President of the club,” said Alex. “It’s a great club at the heart of Didsbury with great camaraderie running through it.”
Bricks start at just £50 and have already been requested by businesses and the public as birthday presents for children and adults, Father’s Day gifts, in memory of loved ones and simply to support local sport. The rugby club is appealing to the local community and local businesses to support the brick appeal. The engraved brick will form a beautiful walkway – a chance to be a part of Didsbury, forever.
