Between standing on the sidelines all season and being involved from behind play last night I have made some observations about what sort of team we are, what are strengths and limitations are and what needs to be addressed if we are ever to progress.
Let's take it from the top though and everyone feel free to take your chance to comment on any grievances you may have.
This website has been maintained to give everyone a platform to communicate and get involved with teammates. Some of you take this opportunity and some of you dont.
We started as a group of about 8 players who decided to get involved in an amateur league for a bit of competitiveness and the chance to play in a "proper" team setup. These players consisted of a few has-beens who played D&D with Magee years ago and are a core group of friends. From this we got more players, through friends, friends of friends and what have you. Basically a group of guys who have played indoor and 7-a-side for a bit of craic.
We got rigs and training sorted and a focus for everyone.
People seem to have forgotten how this happened.
We're any of you boys playing regular 11-a-side before you signed for us? Only 2 players out of our squad of 20 can say they were.
We have players who make training and want a run out. We have players with commitments who cant make training but make games.
Deal with it. We take each game as it comes and put out a side that consists of the best possible team from players available to do a job.
If you want to play a solid 60 minutes of football every Wednesday night then go back to indoor or 7-a-side with mates.
Check out the player stats on this site and see how many games people are getting. The team is always rotated due to injuries/availablity/suspensions and form.
If you have a problem with that then let it be known now on here.
Other than that there is the small matter of our tactics and how we perform on the pitch. Every week we say the same. We have played 24 league games and numerous cup and friendly matches. We still haven't changed.
Defenders blame midfield. Midfield blame defence and forwards. Forwards blame all behind them. It was embarrassing listening to the squabbling and bitching on the pitch last night.
TAKE RESPONSIBILITY!!!
For your man. For your position. For your workrate. For your behaviour.
We are set up for a draw. We sit very deep and when we counter we have no-one further up the pitch and no energy.
Last 9 games... 2 loses, 2 wins, 5 draws.
This season will end very soon lads because we cant win games.
But who said we should win games? What makes you think you have that right? Were you playing for Barca in another life?
Sort it fucking out. This team will not win anything or go anywhere if people can't take on board INSTRUCTIONS and do their fucking JOB on the field.
If you are told to do something then do it. If not, fuck off because you aren't worth the hassle.
Anybody who thinks they're too good? Go contact The Metro FC and ask for a trial and sure see how you get on there.
Batter away boys, open mic so say what you want and don't hold back...
Composure
Care to elaborate?
is needed
And how do we instill composure and confidence in the team?
Cesar Millan uses positive reinforcement to train his dogs. I suggest a pat on the head or a dog biscuit.
Maybe stick a bell inside the ball and let Pavlov's conditioning take over sure.
You cock
2 games before last night we did what G told us and played more relaxed football without getting on eachothers backs. That went out the window last night. We need to make sure we stick to this every week. We do ourselves no favours when someone is in possession and the other 10 team mates are screaming at him like he is about to be raped up the hole by a grizzly bear. That only leads to panick and loss of possession. We need to chill the fuck out, I know i am as much to balme as anyone else and it is easy to let the game and the other team control the way we act but lets keep this in mind and try to get back to it for Sundays game.
PS - like it says above "Too many chiefs and not enough indians"
But people only want to be a chief when it involves simply voicing an opinion on what we are doing wrong, who is shit, who shouldnt be starting, who should be starting, who should play where etc etc.
But ask youself, what else do you contribute apart from turning up with your 2 quid and boots? Who sorts out the pitches and is 20+ quid down a week on the back of it. Who sorts training, rigs, bibs, lifts, reports etc. Everyone wants a game of football but not everyone wants all the hassle of running a team. Which is grand and there are no complaints, but a bit of respect goes a long way.
It aint even that. Forget about who does shit behind the scenes. No-one involved in running this team is looking for a pat on the back.
Our problem is that people think 7-a-side and 11-a-side are the same thing.
It is a completely different game. Miles apart!
Get it into your heads that what you do in indoor or 7-a-side kickabouts do not wash when playing in a structured team.
I fucking score my fair share in half a pitch kickabouts for fuck sake and I have the worst strike of you all. So sort it out
Aye, no one is looking for a pat on the back. But the point is we cant have a team of managers. Everyone is entitled to an opinion and everyone thinks there own opinion is the right one, but the bottom line is that one person needs to be in charge and the rest need to be players. We show up, we play were we are told to play when we are called upon and we do our best in that position for however many minutes we are on the pitch.
Aye man, G gives out tactics of way we should play but wen we get on the pitch we have men calling there own shots and we have no team shape...then its boys that are trying to play the way we were sent out that get grief for not covering at the back...some lads would happily have us play all 10 men in front of box
We try to play the game at 90 mph. Always looking to go forward attacking at every opportunity. Pass the ball backwards for a change. Two strikers will be trying to take the ball off four defenders - if a midfielder of theirs tries to join in sweet there is now a gap in their midfield - exploit that bitch! Calm down, keep possession. Walk with it at your feet if no is around you. Pick a simple pass five yards away instead of the speculative cross field ball. Dont do a long kick out from keepers hands after just defending deeply just because a striker is screaming for it. It'll come straight back putting us under pressure. Let the team get out. Work the ball until we get an opportunity to attack rather than force it. We dont have the fitness/speed to support a striker even if they do control it and hold it up successfully. Please pass backwards!
All in my opinion of course :)
Hahaha.
I dont think we been playing that bad last few weeks, but i really think we should get back into doing hard work on a monday night instead of playin with a ball, thought the whole idea of gettin a kickabout on a friday was to shine the egos with long dribbles and scoring goals.
We been awful 2nd half for quite a lot of games now and i think we losing fitness which was giving us the edge against teams like last night previously.
Think in terms of always looking forward, we are 7 a side men and dont have the vision to play 11 a side so all you see is whats reasonably close to you, also the many times we have tried to play inside and given soft goals cos of bad passes across our own area.
We say about applying training during games and it would be great if we could but in training we rarely have anyone nippin at each others feet and hassling the way you get done in a match. Also we play on a 7 a side pitch in training were a long ball down the line is only a pass from full back to winger on the 11 a side. Also two completely different surfaces, hard to say just copy training out on the ice there
Dont think we need to be so harsh on ourselves, pretty good season so far with a bunch of lads of average abilities. Just keep pluggin away as a team and we'll get a few good results from now til end of season
I wonder what Messi would say about this, especially after his mistake lead to the Chelsea goal last night?
Seriously I don't think we r playing that bad!! I was sayin 2 jimmy and Anton after da match last nite that it's goin 2 b sooner or later we will whack 4,5 or 6 passed a team and it's going 2 come!!
We jus hav 2 stick 2 instructions that r given out b4 games, I can't remember who said it but the team seems 2 set very deep on that big pitch over there and when me or jap came looking 4 da ball we r told 2 stay up on da edge of da 18, which leaves a space of bout 30yards between strikers and midfilelders and it's hard 2 hold da ball up and wait 4 support coming 4 ward!! Did is me speaking as a striker on a frustrating second half in which we never got the ball down and played football!! (and that isn't me blaming da midfielders 4 not supporting us its my opinion of us playing far 2 deep and inviting pressure on r back 4)
I no I can be a cryin fucker when I want 2 be but from da AXA game we hav been cryin 2 each other like spoilt little bitches!!! AXA games was da way we should b playin week in week out, with discipline, a togetherness and having fucking respect for 1 and other!! That nite da formation was rite da team busted there balls for each other and even when we went 1 down we had da belief in eachother 2 get da rite result!!!! (an look at da performance we delivered that nite)
Y CAN'T WE PLAY LIKE THAT EVERY WEEK?????????????
Agreed, replicate the attitude and performance from that Axa game on Sunday, get a win, then there is no excuse to go back to these bad habits!
Yeah well said, one match at a time, playing for the team and as a team, we'll get back on track, up the suits!!!
Midfield don't sit back they are dragged back because we have four defenders picking up one striker. Instead of one man taking the striker and rest push up defence wants the midfielders to mark opposition midfielders when this shouldn't be the case apart from the two centre mids. Also impossible because they had 5 midfielders and we had 4. Our wingers should be up with their full backs and our full backs with their right wingers. If they have one striker up top one of the centre backs need to push up. You just can't mark space and drag the team back.
It is so simple. We wait for men to attack us which is why we don't concede much. We have 11 men in our own half at one point. We make it easier for other teams to attack us because we invite pressure on ourselves. It won't change until we push up as a unit not just one or two people.
PS I don't think we played that bad last night I enjoyed the battle but once again we go back to our old tricks. People not throwing ball quick, people clearing lines when they have time, people not helping team mates with simple shouts Stevey's header, Marty's header, whoevers header.
Same sh1t just another game. It won't change, people are stuck in their ways. Easier to accept things at this stage, been said too many times and still no change.
That sums up our problem, any time we getting over run its because we too deep as a unit and the other teams full backs are sitting up near the half way line so they pin us back.
Second half the other night for first 15 i was playing right back and dom was playin centre half to mark a forward.
Need to stop thinkin we can mark space at the back and have other people pick up men
Don't really know what to say, everythings been pretty much said!
Was texting James last night saying that we have went unbeaten in the league for the past 7 games, good enough run for any team, draws or wins!
Our record is 9! Lets pull together in at least equal dat record! Gives us something to aim for because winning the league went out the window weeks ago and some in the team dnt even want promotion from a play-off postion which I can totally understand!
One step at a time, last night we didn't make any stupid mistakes at the back for the first time in ages and didn't get on the referees back as much! We might not have scored but the main thing is we didn't concede
If we can do this on Sundays game then we can tackle problems further up the pitch!
PMA
:-)
i dnt really no most of u boys that well an didnt see the match last night but in retrospect to people thinking of winning leagues an shit lik that i think ur of ur rocker at the start of the season theres no way any of yous boys thought u would even be in the top 5 never mind challanging for the tittle at the end of the day it is only an astro league an i think if it was enjoyed a bit more rather than takein so serious at times things would come are way i no no1 wants to lose an i no its good to have a bit of competitiveness but remember yous started the season as friends end it lik at instead of cuttin each other an your selves up after each game........ thats my just my view nothing personal
I see you saved all your full stops for the very end of your comment Mickey :)
I hate losing though Mick!
You're good at it though!
We all are
i no no1 likes to lose i hate my self but sumtimes in the changein room after games i feel lik the little romainian orphan not knowin wer to look or wat to do watch yous boys arguein an killin each other its kinda hard to watch i no its al forgotten about the next day but eventually sum1 wil take it bad
hahahaha
funny how this post got every1 out of the woodwork G hahaha
Like we said a few weeks ago... League hasn't gone, it never was there for us. We got into a bubble because we played weaker times at the start and got the results. Since then we have been found out. So we are better going out and enjoying it and treating it as a chance to get fit and get experience rather than the crying and bitching that goes on usually.
There still needs to be structure etc but all egos and primadonna attitudes need to be left in the house. Accept reality. If you were any good you would be already signed for a decent team so get over yourselves and do as your instructed.
Classic cliche but very apt... There is no "i" in TEAM
Holy shit lads, I would hate to see yas if we were losing every wk.
If we are playing the game at 90mph, then Dom is easily cruising at 160. I think we should look closely at his diet and all eat what he is eating, is there room in the budget to bulk buy skittles though?
Stevey you rumbled the plan of the defence. Our ultimate goal was to get another midfielder on board and have 5 men marking the one man, just form a kind of circle around him so he could never shoot or pass. But thanks for highlighting our failures, we were destined for doom, I mean what if he didn't have the ball?
I'm also guilty of not shouting for headers, I'm obviously some kind of freak with a genetic defect where I don't yelp my name when I'm concentrating on a spherical object plummeting towards my head, sorry, will try harder. In saying that I've found that shouting this to me after I head the ball doesn't fix the problem, it only makes me think 'duck off you fick'.
Professional footballers make mistakes, games change, teams can be cruising n momentum can change, (any1 c the sporting/bilbao match) shouting at each other won't help feck all, so chill out n stop moaning. If not for yourselves then for poor micky, he just wants us all to be happy :)
In conclusion here is my 4 point plan to winning, lets play like barca, lets score more goals than the opposition, lets not concede any goals and most importantly don't let g hit any goalkicks, ever! n don't listen to him he's a liar, he never scores at 7 a side!!
Also can I congratulate g on his fine clean sheet on wed, and for running the team perfectly.
Oh n I'm available for sunday ;)
Happy friday lads
Bye
Marty
First clean sheet in 9 games Marty, I'm hanging up my gloves now after that.
Maybe you're a shy soul when you don't have drink in you but being vocal on the pitch doesn't mean you should be ranting and raving at fellow players, just means you should let people know where you are and if you would like a wee turn of the football. Let's hear you!!!!
Just to be clear you want me to have a few drinks before I go on the pitch, I think that can be arranged, I'll meet Jap in the bar before hand :)
Look at you taking full credit for that clean sheet, yeah there is no i in team, but you have pulled out M and E.
lol @ Marty
You talk about shouting after will not fix the problem well if talking about it before hand doesn't fix the problem then what will? It ain't about making mistakes its about not following instructions. I didn't once criticise anyone for making a mistake it happens to everyone. My points were not directed at you 3 times and 6 different people went for the same ball so don't be taking things personally. No one plays there back 4 five yards in front of their defence it invites pressure. No ones fault but someone needs to take control and push everyone up and stop worrying about space in behind.
Like I said I didn't think we played badly but the things we talk about before the game and the things we know we are doing wrong creep back in. Which is why I said it easier to accept these things than try and rectify them. It hasn't changed before so why would it change in the future.
It ain't about the result I would have said the same thing if we won. If people are happy to go from game to game playing the same way making the same mistakes and not want to improve then fair enough I'll stop giving my opinion on how I think we could get better. I only say these things because it is basic sh1t which could make a massive difference.
Don't worry ain't takin it personally. How do we fix the problem? I'll try and shout my name the next time I go up for a header, I may get better at it the more times I try :) Beware though it may take time.
I don't get the points being made that the defenders want 4 people to mark one forward, therefore we are sitting too deep. You think we are all sadists who just want to defend for 60mins?? Esp when we had Dom bombing forward most of the match, n even Decky flew forward a few times, unfortunately his natural inclination made him veer more towards the right wing which bamboozled most of the opposition for a few seconds. We just need to pick up a man when we don't have the ball. If the left back is missing and I'm dragged out then others fill in. Everyone should work hard and try their best. Mistakes will happen, doesn't mean people aren't listening to (ignoring) instructions. People want to improve and prob will improve the more games they play. Someday it'll all click and will fall into place, if you want things quicker you get a sugar daddy to get in a few ringers.
speakin of sugar, Its lunch time dudes, laters ;)
Go forward all you like. When the time is right. Full backs should be pushing their wingers back.
The problem is that we defend as a line 10 yards frm our own box. That is too deep. We should set up 20 yards further forward, meaning our midfield is higher up supporting the frontmen. Simples.
I'll show you how to do it on Sunday ok sonny boy?
Yeah man no prob, although 20 yards further forward on that pitch will prob put you just outside their box ;)
That'd suit you right down to the ground! Just let us know that's were your headed though. Through vocal communication or sign language
Times have changed you are usually tellin me not to cross the halfway line (in my right back days) now I have license to rome, I like it, total football we'll show 'em how to do it. I'll use a whistling system to alert you to my movements.
You never listen anyway! When I told you to stay back it was when we were 2-0 up and we just had to see out remaining minutes. Your a moonman though and just follow the ball like a wee jack russell. I applaud your enthusiasm! You need a lease though
Ah you have some memory, 2-0 up eh, which game was that? answer quickly or I will know you are cheating.
Don't think I've crossed the halfway line as a centre back, as instructed of course :) I do creep over occasionally when u ain't looking, just for the thrill.
CS Athletic. 2-0 up. Drew 2-2.
I aint having a go at you. Do as you wish. Please put your name on the ball though please. They teach that to 5 year olds
Mmmmh 10 mins to ans? I call cheat. I'll take ur word for it. My memory is going, don't even remember this famous axa match, I blame google, 5 is the age to start, old dog n all that ;)
I actually do have some work to do other than sit on this all day!
We beat AXA 4-2 after going 1-0 down. We got a penalty which turned the game for us. Wasn't a great performance, we've played better (2nd half vs BeKabs was best 30 minutes of the season).
Aye no bother, my use of your memory recall is finished, there will be no more testing for today, you've passed. ha ha. Now get back to work ya dosser.
Queer!
centre back never covers full back man....if the full back goes forward its the wingers job to fill in
Yes it is rather strange.
I think we did well on Wed night, bossed the first half. If we had got a goal we would have won.
Problem is, and it's already been said, the other team are always going to get a period when they are on top. And that was first 15 mins of the 2nd half and we just got dragged into their game, we started chasing men, lost our shape, started booting the ball. We just got to keep playing our game and chill out
IMO Stevey and Jim called out the 2 main probs, if defence pushes up 5 or 10 yards when the ball is in the opp final third that would help the midfield out when things break down for us ... and one of the forwards needs to drop deeper, get involved with the play, no point us hoofin it to the edge of their box and hoping Jim or someone can hold it up. Our best chance on Wed came when we got behind them, but we can't do that too often when our forwards and their defenders are sitting 25 yards from their goal.
We played 20 odd games and we're in the hunt with 5 games to go, let's take the next game and try and put all this into practice. Big thanks to G, Stevey and John O'Shea for putting all this together, training is good, everything's well organised, G's the poor fcuker who has to watch us play every week so lets listen to how he want us to play ... at least for one match :)
