TOWN EDGE PULSATING DERBY
I know it sounds like a cliché but today’s match was as good as junior football can get, two honest teams locking horns and entertaining the crowd.
Town started very brightly, continuing from the match yesterday. Chances were created by both sides but Town were rewarded just within 10 minutes as Marcus drove down the right wing and thumped a ball into the top left corner. But Maltby hit back within a few minutes with a smart swivelling shot. They pushed again and hit Town on the break and a desperate tackle was mistimed and resulted in a penalty which was smashed past Josh who did well to get a hand to it. HT 1-2
The boys started the second half with the same determination and moved the ball around nicely. We won a series of corners which Oliver swung in and it was from a cleared corner that the ball dropped to Wills and from well outside the box met the ball as sweet as could be and looped a shot over the keepers head to equalise. The last significant goalmouth action was for Maltby to strike a lovely shot again from outside the box and Josh acrobatically leapt to push the ball onto the crossbar and then was sharp enough to gather in the loose ball on the goal-line. FT 2-2
The players changed for the second game but the intensity, commitment and quality didn’t drop and both sides carved out chances for themselves. Town started to take control in midfield, winning good possession and a series of corners. On 11 minutes Josh took a corner and swung it to the back post where Jamie met it to loop a header past the diving goalie. With their tails up we pushed again and within two minutes were further ahead as Jamie scored his and Town’s second of the game. HT 2-0
We asked the boys just to continue as they were and they certainly did, we again got good possession and chances. However on 26 minutes we gave the ball away cheaply and Maltby punished us by scoring and the lead was back to one. A couple of firm challenges resulted in Josh and Ben limping off the field but we continued to battle, everyone putting in a shift. The tension grew as the match drew to a close, we had to call on Morgan more than once to pull off superb saves to keep us in front. Maltby were really pushing and the supporters, coaches and managers were feeling the strain but as Town defended another attack, Sam, Jamie, Kaya and Josh went on a break and when three on one put a great move together for Josh to smash home the decider to the delight of the Dinnington supporters. FT 3-1
Another thoroughly entertaining match with our nearest neighbours, our biggest rivals and great friends. The match was contested in the best, most sporting way and both teams and everyone associated with them should be proud. Man of the Matches were awarded to Nick and Morgan and a Star Award to Will for his first goal and all round performance.
