Dinting 198 for 9 Hazel Grove 129
Dinting travelled to Hazel Grove on the Sunday in the quarter finals of the Bissenden Cup with a good cup run hugely important to both teams. Although the game started under threatening skies the umpires were quick to take the field and it proved to be the right decision as the weather improved greatly as the day went on.
Dinting lost the toss and were asked to bat on a wet wicket. Harwick (2) nicked a rising delivery from Haywood in the first over which brought the dangerous Brightmore to the crease. Gerrard and Brightmore set about the Grove bowling adding 42 for the 2nd wicket until Gerrard (12) fell to a good catch in the covers off the bowling of Leach. Wilson (8) soon joined Gerrard in the clubhouse after Noden took a superb one handed catch in the outfield. Elliot hung around for with Brightmore for a little longer and added 70 for the 3rd wicket. By now Brightmore was in superb form looking every inch a class player. He stroked the ball around the ground with ease and clearly demonstrated his immense talent. He passed his 50 in 42 balls and strode on to his 100 in fine style after just 80 deliveries without giving a single chance. He and Elliott rotated the strike well and gave the Grove fielders a torrid time. Unfortunately for the spectators Brightmore departed for 105 stumped off the bowing of Leach when clearly a really big hundred was on the cards, a brilliant knock nonetheless. Elliott (19) followed immediately afterwards and again Dinting failed to capitalise on the large gaps in the field again, incoming batters were all too keen to hit boundaries rather than push the ball into gaps with Woollesen (6) Coleman (12) and Seville (3) the main culprits. A ninth wicket stand of 16 was particularly important with Worrall (10no) and Thompson (8no) taking the score to 198 at close
In reply Hazel Grove never really got going. Noden and Burke hung around for 22 overs to take the score to 53 after tight spells from Seville (0 – 21) and Wyche (0 – 17). However with introduction of Thompson into the attack the game changed. Some truly impressive flight and turn led to the exits of Noden (23), Hayward (0) and Gibbs, all falling in the same over. At this stage any fight from the Hazel Grove batsmen evaporated . Indeed, for the next 10 overs Grove didn’t seem to want to play any shots. Thompson picked up 2 more wickets finishing with a fine 5 for 11. With the score on 78 for 6 after 30 overs Ian Hayward (34) came to crease and began to try and push the total along, Worrall received most of the tap conceding several sixes but he finally got his man caught by the safe hands of Seville. Worrall picked up another 3 wickets after showing his patience and determination finishing with 4 wickets for 42 runs.
Although Thompson bowled beautifully for his 5 wickets the Bodycheck Man of the Match award goes to Danny Brightmore for a superb 100
