Dinton and Aston Rowant draw in a close fought thriller

Dinton fall 2 runs short of Aston Rowants 252 in a fantastic close match.

With a showery start to the day at Aston Rowant Cricket Club, there was an uncertainty whether the game would start on time. But the rain held off and Rowant won the toss and decided to bat on a greenish deck. The Dinton bowlers started well finding movement from the pitch, especially from back of a length. Faisal Ali made the first break through, Chris Watling dragging the ball on from a wide delivery. That brought young batsmen Daniel Matthews to crease, Dinton opening bowlers toiled away but without luck. The introduction of Tim Brooker slowed the run rate well, bowling tight lines around off stump, but Tim Morgan and Daniel Matthews battled well. Runs started to flow more as the ball got older and pitch started to look very flat with the ball coming on nicely. The introduction of spin twins Alister Gibbens and Shakil Ahmad did little to slow the run rate, with the pitch not taking much spin at all. Morgan and Matthews continued at their steady rate and passed fifty with little trouble, after lunch Morgan looked as though he would take the attack to the Dinton bowlers, with Gibbens and Ahmad still working in tandem Morgan managed to move the score on nicely moving into the nineties quickly. But the return of Faisal Ali brought the end of Morgan, caught for a well played 96 by Shakil Ahmad. With the break in partnership Matthews looked to move the run rate on but fell to Ahmad, caught by Gough at short fine leg. With the score on 185-2 the stage looked set for the Rowant middle order to post a big score. But aside from Ferraby (37) and Morrick (19) Ahmad kept it tight finishing with figures of 3-64 from 21 overs. Rowant eventually finished on 252-5.

Having seen how comfortable batting became once the new ball started to lose its shine, Dinton were determined to get off to a good start and get through the first few overs of the new ball. But things did not get off to a good start losing Marland and Gough early to good balls. Skipper Mike Sutliff joined Rob King at the crease; both played watchfully at the beginning but characteristically punished anything short, especially anything outside the off stump King cut with conviction. Sutliff was quickly into his stride anything of a full length was driven very firmly to the boundary. Dinton reached tea with the game at an exciting position the score on 93-2, Sutliff on 49 and King on 35. The runs continued to flow for Dinton after the break but Sutliff fell for a fine 83, Gibbens unfortunately couldn’t add to the score and left Dinton on 147-4. Massey came in to partner King and the pair managed to consolidate the innings adding fifty before looking to launch a counter attack. But unfortunately King fell for 71, who battled hard for his team fantastically. Dinton were awkwardly poised at 206-5 when Faisal Ali came to the crease still needing 47 to win. Faisal Ali unfortunately couldn’t contribute any runs, but Shakil Ahmad came in and played positively striking a huge six over mid-on. But when calling for a quick single there was a mix up between the pair and unfortunately Ahmad was run out for 11. Dinton still needing 23, Massey however kept playing positively, with time running out Dinton needed 18 from 2 overs. Massey struck a lovely six over the bowlers head but unluckily lost the ball in the process. Massey managed to keep striking the ball very cleanly throughout the over and come the last ball Dinton needed 3 for the win or 2 for a draw. But Glenn Calton fired in a superb Yorker and Massey could only manage a single. Massey finished on 59 not out.

The result leaves the Dinton top still by 7 points with Rowant closing the gap slightly, next week Dinton welcome Thame Town Cricket Club.
