Diss 59 : 36 Rochford Hundred - 8th April 2017
Diss win the league in style
On a warm, sunny spring afternoon Diss ended their league campaign in style in an exciting game with a victory that keeps their 3 year unbeaten home record iintact.
With promotion assured the hosts did not have things all their own way after scoring on 2½ minutes through a mazy run from Beaird, set up by McClure, to feed Le Lievre and onto Laurie who went over for the try. The conversion missed. Rochford responded immediately with a flowing backs move first right then left and with Diss defending too narrow Pickering found space out wide to score the visitors first try – converted.
A second was to follow swiftly after that as again Diss defending too narrow allowed a grubber kick through their defensive line for Pickering to chase and score an unconverted try. The score now 5-12.
Next honours were to Diss after a scrum on the Rochford 5m allowed Hipwell to pick and go to feed West who went over for his first try, converted by McClure. Shortly after that, a series of mid field penalties ended up with McClure finding touch on the Rochford 5m line. The line out, which functioned well all afternoon was won and Richards burrowed his way through the Rochford defence to get on the score sheet. The try was converted by McClure.
The end to end action continued with Le Lievre scoring a well worked try after a break from McClure set him up. Immediately followed by a try from Rochford’s full back, Billings, who showed great pace and footwork all match as he joined their line and went wide to score.
Diss were to have the last say in the first half through a great try set up by McClure. He offloaded to Beaird who, with a lot of work to do, barrelled his way through two defenders to score under the posts. Converted by McClure, who kicked very well all afternoon. The teams went in at half time with the score at 33-17.
Rochford came out for the second half determined and at no time took a backward step as they seized on every attacking opportunity. However Diss were in a belligerent mood with their pack starting to dominate proceedings and soon after the second half started, created possibly the best try of the match. It began from a ruck midfield when Hipwell broke two tackles to feed McClure who jinxed through two more defenders, off loaded to Wilby who timed his pass beautifully to Le Lievre to go over his second try. McClure converting.
Rochford were not done yet. After winning their own line out on the Diss 22m, set up a maul from which their flanker, Rufai, peeled off and scored a converted try. The visitors followed that up with another try from a clearance kick from Beaird, collected by their number 7 mid field who chose a running line on the blind side. After breaking three tackles, went on to score a solo try. The scoreboard now reading 40-29
Wilby was next on the score sheet for Diss as Le Lievre cut through the Rochford Defence with sublime footwork to give him the finishing pass. Again converted by McClure. Rochford replied immediately through a well-directed grubber for their 15 to chase and score from.#
The action continued a pace as Leeder took a quick penalty in mid field to set Laurie off on a destructive run through the middle of the Rochford Defence eventually finding Wishart in support who took his opportunity to score. Hipwell, who had an outstanding game, got in on the action from the last scrum of the game with a pick and go from the base beating 3 defenders to score wide. A breathless finish to a good game of rugby. The final score 59-36.
