DONAGHADEE RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB

Fellow Members,

Last season, our first in Championship D3, we had what most Clubs would consider a season of unprecedented success, losing only four matches in both Cup and League competition. We played in the Gordon West Cup Final at Ravenhill, got ourselves into the play-offs for league promotion to Championship 2 and scored a Club record points tally for a season. Given our record in the 2016 / 17 season, this represented a magnificent turnaround for the Club and everyone involved must be congratulated. We have the ambition, talent and ability to finish off what we started last season and I look forward to the new season with Club Captain Matthew Stockton at the helm.

The Second XV also delivered on the pitch but, like the First XV, failed to clinch victory at the very end of a great League campaign. The popular and talented Ryan Campbell leads the Second XV this season managed by Tom Northey. This team is fundamental to the success of the First XV and I entreat all members to enthusiastically support, foster and promote rugby at all levels.

Connor McKee has sadly taken the decision to move to further his studies. Andy Monson has kindly agreed to remain in his position as Director of Rugby and with Paul Blewitt as Head Coach supported by Chris Good and with our recruitment drive bringing in a number of formidable young players, I expect Donaghadee Rugby to go all the way in League and Cup competitions this season.

Guy McManus has worked tirelessly and in his new title is Club Participation Officer I am certain that he will apply his usual amount of skill and drive to all aspects of the very successful Junior (boys and girls) and Ladies rugby programmes in North Down.

The Mini’s go from strength to strength and the turnout on Sundays is very impressive. This is the future of our Club and must be fully integrated into all aspects of Rugby Club spirit and lifestyle. The Ladies section are evolving and developing in tandem with the rest of the Club and deserve your support.

Our President, John Blewitt, sets an example and works tirelessly in a number of roles but the Club needs more volunteers to fill the vacant posts and do the small, but essential, jobs that go into making our Club a great place to be.

Our enthusiasm for the new season was somewhat tempered by the loss of our long serving President and Club stalwart, Bill Boomer. Condolences to the family.

Finally, good luck to all the players and coaches. Please give your support to the players on the field and to all of our fundraising efforts. C’mon the Dee!

Yours faithfully,

Stephen G. Quinn Q.C.
Chairman
