The top of the table 3s headed off to a well organised Kingstonian side, both teams arriving in plenty of time to have a proper warm up in the sunshine. Skipper for the day Hallas (aka top tosser) won the coin call and put the oppo in. Phillips & Blood opened up, Will his usual frugal self offering the batsmen nothing and the pace of Travis causing huge discomfort at the other end. Travis was particularly unlucky, finding the edge twice only to see both edges fly between keeper & first slip for 4. Third time lucky and the next edge was well held at 2nd slip by DY. Change bowlers of D Young (1-23 from 9) & T Brewster (2-23 from 8) kept the lines tight and ensured the oppo found runs hard to come by and at drinks after 24 overs Kinstonian were 4 down and the run rate just 2.5. Expecting Kingstonian to go on the attack after drinks Dorking refocused and made sure the onslaught was not allowed to happen. D Godfrey (3-17 from 6) and F Edwards (1-14 from 5) as well as return spells from Blood & Phillips meant that whilst Kingstonian saw out their 50 overs the rate never increased and they finished on 137-8.
We headed off to tea confident that whilst we would only have 45 overs back, the total was very achievable. Sadly, 5 overs in and with the score on 4-3, the innings took on a rather different tone. Davies, Horton & Brewster fell to the Kinstonian opening pair, leaving M Cox and Halliday to rebuild. They put on a patient 33 before Cox, having seen off all the good bowling, hit a rank long hop through cover who pulled off a blinder of a catch. D Kenway came and went and Halliday snicked behind, bringing Godfrey & Edwards to the crease at a key point in the game. Dorking were 6 down with a lot of overs left to bat, and this young pair set about their task with great maturity, defending well and hitting the bad ball when available. The tight bowling meant that the win was becoming more and more unlikely so the pair took the correct decision to ensure that the oppo did not take maximum points. Their defence held true until with 4 overs to go Godfrey got one that popped on him, breaking a 20+ over partnership. D Young came to the crease and he and Edwards saw the game through to it's conclusion, not the most exciting finish but who's to say how valuable the points denied Kingstonian will prove at the business end of the season.
