Effingham Goes To The Wire

Effingham Goes To The Wire

The VCL II arrived at Effingham with a rather young and inexperienced side. Effingham won the toss and put Dorking into bat. It started shaky as Dorking lost their first wicket for only 5 runs, Mo Hamid, the man being dismissed for 1. The middle order of Robbie Howlett & Jack Homewood, with opener Chris Stone set to rebuild after the early loss. Both Robbie and Chris got into the late 20's but both got out in unlucky ways. Andy Walker looked good early on as he hit three 4's but was undone by his own confidence, as he was caught in the covers.

While wickets were falling Jack Homewood steadied the innings with a patient 45 off 90. The arrival of Andrew Homewood upped the run rate to a point where Dorking were heading to a competitive total. As wickets fell Dorking were all out in the 44th over, for 176. A bad start that ended well, with A. Homewood not out on 40.

The Effingham innings started in the same fashion as Freddie Fownes-Walpole got the breakthrough in the second over by bowling Couzeas for a duck. Freddie was aided by George Edwards with a solid opening 10 overs. The Effingham batsman Iqbal & Cooper built a strong partnership and both scored in the 30's, as they took the score to 65, before Cooper was bowled with a great ball from Cameron Homewood. With the score on 78 the third wicket fell as Iqbal was run out from deep extra cover by a Mo Hamid throw. Fewson and Sandford-Marshall steadied the scoring as they took Effingham to 114, when Sandford-Marshall was caught by Walker at mid-on, Beardmore being he bowler. Fewson hit a flurry of boundaries that took him to 50 and his team to 162 for 4. With victory in sight skipper A. Homewood took the ball and produced a game changing spell of 5 for 15 off 6 overs, including a hat-trick and 4 wickets in one over, as Effingham went from 162 for 4, to 162 for 9. With both teams insight of victory, Effinghams number 7, Robens hit some lusty blows edging his team closer to victory but at 168 for 9, J. Homewood ended the game by bowling Robens. Dorking ended up winning by 8 runs, in a thrilling game that went to the wire.
