MoM - Owen - Part of a solid defence today, caused havoc in the opposition box for set pieces and got the all important winner

Not our best performance recently, but Saints kept it going to the end to pinch another win, in what has been a terrific run since Christmas.

We knew it would be another difficult game, with Boco Jnr's beating the second place team recently, so Saints started patiently looking to see where any weaknesses in the opposition may lie.. Boco started the stronger for the first 20 mins, but found the back 4 of Chris, Croy, Owen and Connor in resilient mood so Will hardly touched the ball. Will was called upon once, racing quickly off his line to save at the Boco strikers feet. The one time they did break through out wide on their left travelling down the by line and cutting back in to shoot form 6 yards, Will made a terrific save to his left to divert he ball out for a corner. Saints grew into the game and had a few moments of their own. It was good to see us using the width and triangles to move forward down both the left with Harry and right with Liam using our CMs Luke and Matt to good effect. Darren and John upfront pressed the Boco defence, but it took until the 25th minute to get a shot away.. Once the ball had got to Matt from our break down the left, he hit it sweetly on the half volley from the edge of the area, only to see his shot swerving in the wind, come back off the bar, onto the back of the Boco Keeper, run along the goal line and out for a corner... Saints tails were up and it was there turn to press for a goal. A few corners were won but not capitalised on. but a break down the right this time, saw the ball crossed in from the right, where John passed back inside to Luke whose powerful shot beat the keeper at the near post...
Saints had a few half chances, where Darren controlled and turned sharply only to see his shot deflected just wide of the post, and John shot straight at the keeper.

HT - 0-1

A positive team talk and an objective for a clean sheet was the instructions for the second half, which for the first 20 mins was the way it went although both teams looked a little laboured and narrow. The second half saw the introduction of Jonny (LW), Ben (RB), Mitchell CM) and Dilan (CF) to add some fresh legs. Jonny and Dilan combined a few times down the left to open up a few half chances but our shots were not quite connected and were straight at the keeper. Ben carried on the good work done by Chris in the first half and kept it tight at the back supported still by Croy, Owen and Connor, limiting Boco to some long range efforts that Will comfortably saved. Mitchell was working hard in midfield and trying to get the ball out wide to stretch the Boco defence. He was also our free kick taker putting the ball into the Boco penalty area where Owen was causing the Boco defence all sorts of problems with his height. Mitchell also went directly for goal on 2 occasions only to see one effort sail over and the other just wide.

Then came a lapse in concentration as an attack from Saints on the edge of the Boco penalty area, was cleared low through our midfield and defence and collected by the Boco striker who shot past the advancing Will... A few minutes later an arial clearance from the half way line went through to Will who saw the ball was going Wide, until it bounced and caught the wind to bounce over him and sneak into the corner... 10 minutes to go and it was now 2-1.. Would Saints's winning streak come to an end... Another couple of substitutions and some urgency saw Saints lift their game which saw the triangles re-appear with Mitchell , Luke and Dilan combining through the middle to see John race through an coolly finish past the advancing Boco keeper.. 2-2 and still time to go, but a draw was probably a fair result, however the boys had different ideas. Another free kick just inside the Boco half saw Mitchell launch one into the penalty area, where several players went for the ball, including the Boco keeper who tried to catch it, saw it bounce off his chest where Owen was on hand to head in the winner.. with only a few minutes left...

No time left and the boys relieved to come out with a win.

FT - 2-3

2 more games to go where if we win both, 3rd could be our final resting place of the season which would be a great achievement.
Keep it going boys :-)
