It was an awful day, but the rain did eventually stop, and at least we were local travelling all of three miles to get to Chesterfield

Dronfield U15 Edge Hard Fought Semi Final

Dronfield were unlucky not to score in the first half, excellent defending by Mellish stopped Dronfield short three times, and but for an excellent tackle from Reagan Spiers Mellish may have made a break when the winger gathered a clearing kick and Reagan pushed him to touch.

Both teams seemed nervous with unforced errors on both sides, knock-ons and forward passes were all too commonplace and my fingernails were only too happy to hear the referee blow for half-time.

I don’t know what was said at half time but Mellish were a different side. They charged at the Dronfield defence hammering relentlessly at the walls phase after phase, eventually they found a chink, an overlap in the corner and broke through to score by the corner post.

The rain had stopped but the wind was still very strong and made the conversion almost impossible the ball kept blowing off the tee eventually the kicker attempted drop kick which slid past the outside of the post.

A long restart kick straight into touch gave Mellish a scrum on the half way line but a fumbled pass gave possession straight back to Dronfield. A well won scrum and Ollie Patu set off towards the Mellish try line the ball moved quickly through the hands out to the wing and but for a high tackle on Jay Greensill he would have scored in the corner.

The referee ran straight for the posts, penalty try leaving an easy kick in front of the goal posts. The remainder of the half little was given away back and forth again both sides eager to win and with only 2 points in it there was everything to play for.

Dronfield inched towards the Mellish 22 but again Mellish turned them over but time was against them the ball went dead and the whistle blew.

Not the most beautiful game but well played both sides and many thanks to Mellish for their good wishes for the finals.
