Incident Sours Emphatic DK Victory
Emphatic DK victory soured by unsavoury incident in first ever fixture between DK and Woodrush at this age group.

On probably the warmest Sunday of the year so far, a much depleted DK squad welcomed Woodrush U15’s to Heathbrook for a first ever fixture between this age group of players. Such was the dearth of available backs for DK , that their Coach revisited old training contacts and was fortunate enough to persuade Gareth Evans from the Under 14’s to step up an age group and provide some cover on the bench. As some may not know Gareth originally started with our age group as a 7 year old and played up an age until the 2007 season.
DK started brightly with the harsh lessons taught to us by Shrewsbury strongly to mind. They early rucks and mauls were strongly contested and this time it was refreshing to see DK repeatedly being able to turnover Woodrush ball. From such quality ball, Jack Bray (making a first start at scrum half having been moved in from his usual wing berth) was able to get our back and forwards charging into the Woodrush defence . Only poor execution of the final pass was to deny an immediate try. However the good sized crowd didn’t have too long to wait . Miles Legister who is growing in confidence with every game he plays drove through 4 or even 5 would be tacklers to record his second try of the season. This was then followed up by a superbly worked try by the back line who put Tom Parkes in for an excellent score. Bayliss clearly had his kicking boots on converting both the second from quite away out.
Unfortunately this good start then withered as complacency and some lazy defence and quite apologetic tackling allowed the Woodrush Hooker to make a barnstorming run through the middle of our defence and score almost under the posts.
Strong words from Isaac Latham had the much needed effect with Dk responding with a further two converted scores of their own through Harry Bayliss and again our flying wingman Tom Parkes. The half however again finished disappointingly with weak tackling allowing the Woodrush No:12 to score out wide on the left. The conversion was unsuccessful

The second half started with a raft of substitutions , Matthew Acaster , Scott Fawkes, Ben Southall, and Joel F-C coming on in the pack. This gave the forwards even greater power and with the inclusion of Southall at 8 some real speed of the back of the scrum.
will hancox at fly-half has been growing in confidence and authority over recent weeks, and having been instrumental in two of our better team tries in the first half, he now began to orchestrate proceedings, through his attacking play both with ball in hand and with some excellent chips over the onrushing Woodrush defence. Gareth Evans came on at Scrum half for a first ever taste of rugby at this level and did not let himself down providing clean ball to the backs throughout the second half. DK scored a further five tries during the half ( 2 more for Bayliss, Jake Whitney, and Rhys Hamilton) with Hancox scoring a stunning individual try of his own. Bayliss again successful with three conversions.
DK’s defence and aggression in the contact area was much improved during the second half led particularly by the backrow, with Mac McLaughlin putting in several scything tackles on Woodrush players.
Sadly his game was to be cut short after another such explosive tackle on a Woodrush player . At the next immediate breakdown the same Woodrush player who had previously been tackled lost his head, landing several punches on a prone and defenceless MacLaughlin. As tempers flared from both sides the Woodrush player and one of the DK players was issued their marching orders receiving red cards for violent contact and retaliation respectively.
It is to be noted that sadly it is this incident rather than the excellent flowing rugby played by both sides for which this match will be remembered.
