Superior Shrews Over Run Depleted DK
DK endured a chastening experience at the hands of a well-organised and experienced Shrewsbury side that included no less than fourteen county players
Sunday 6th March 2011
Squad:
Matthew Acaster, Alex Brooks, Scott Fawkes, Hayden Green,
Rhys Hamilton, Ryan Healey, Patrick Keen, isaac latham, James Wheeler, Harry Bayliss, will hancox, Tom Parkes, Ben Aston, Jack Bray, Tom Jones, James Hadley, Will Renwick, Dan Southall.
Shrewsbury U15 57, DK U15 0.
The score was very similar to that of the corresponding opening fixture at Heathbrook (on a day that will also have been remembered as being just a little wet).
Once again Shrewsbury were able to score tries at frequent intervals; with their pack dominant at the breakdown and in the set piece, together with the ability to offload in the tackle, Shrewsbury were utterly dominant throughout. They even had a scrum half who can box kick! The DK boys never gave up, but were simply out-gunned. It didn’t help that it was a rather depleted squad that made it to Uffington, but there can be no excuses. When DK did get the ball, the backs again found the defence in their faces and any attacking moves were normally forced sideways with little forward momentum. To pick out a few names, amongst the forwards, Alex Brooks and Ryan Healey were always in the thick of things, but immediate support for the ball carriers was often lacking, with some players tending to wait for the ball to come to them, rather than striving to get their hands on it. In the backs, Harry Bayliss was a marked man and on this occasion could only rarely make an impression on the opposition defence. Jack “Biscuit” Bray put in a brave defensive performance on the wing and played with both intelligence and commitment.
It is hoped that the team will have learned from the experience and will move on to the next game in a positive frame of mind - Shrewsbury lose matches very rarely, so this was always going to be a hard fixture.
Next match – at home to Woodrush R.F.C., Sunday March 13th 2011. K.O. 11 a.m.
