WE SHALL NEVER FORGET-REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY

Mishi Morath11 Nov 2012 - 00:01

The following was published in the 'South London Observer' on the 29th May 1915:

To the Dulwich Volunteers

'Tis grand to see the well-filled ranks,
Men from the works and mills and banks,
Asking neither pay nor thanks
Simply volunteers.

No poet I to sing you praise
Your splendid work your worth portrays.
Witness of grit in younger days
Local volunteers.

your marksmanship well credits you,
"Deliberate," you soon pulled through.
Why, some have "shot the Rapids," too!
Only volunteers.

What a tale to tell the shirkers!
What a model for non-workers!
Shaming all the side-street lurkers!
Only volunteers.

I couldn't sing too loud o' you-
All Dulwich will feel proud o' you.
Here's to all the crowd o' you.
Bravo volunteers.
