With the score level at one a-piece, a brave attempt by Becks' Graham Loki to deny Nyren Clunis ended in tragedy as the 'keeper's leg was shattered in the impact.
The team opened their preseason campaign with a short trip to the Eden Park Avenue home of Southern Counties East Football League side Beckenham Town. Unfortunately, it was not to be an auspicious night as the game was abandoned in the 68th minute as substitute home ‘keeper Graham Loki suffered a horrendous broken leg after making a brave, goal-denying save at the feet of Nyren Clunis. As the severity of the injury was realised there was no alternative but to call the game off whilst an ambulance was called for the stricken ‘keeper.
Prior to that the game had kicked off in unseasonably wet weather with Eden Park Avenue lashed by heavy rain. Both sides created a number of openings in a keenly contested first half but it was Dulwich Hamlet who created the better of them. Early on Dumebi Dumaka forced a smart stop out of the home goalie, the ball shovelled away on the goal line after the Hamlet striker rose highest to power a downward header goalward. The ‘keeper would later deny Dumebi Dumaka again whilst also keeping out a close-range effort from former Cheltenham Town striker Jeff Goulding. However, as the game went on the Becks began to create dangerous chances of their own and it would be the hosts who would lead at the break. Four minutes behind half time a free kick was swung in low into the six-yard box and the Beckenham centre forward dived down to divert a header past Preston Edwards.
With ten changes at the break only Preston Edwards remained of the starting XI after the interval and Dulwich freshness swiftly told as the team pulled level with just a couple of minutes played. With Quade Taylor joining a Hamlet cavalry charge upfield he was in the right place to pick up on a loose ball in the box, cutting the ball back to Gavin Tomlin who steadied himself before firing home for the leveller. Beckenham Town’s goal scorer missed a great opportunity to retake the lead through 1 on 1 against Preston Edwards only to fire wide as the big custodian came out to narrow the angle. However ultimately it would not matter as Loki’s injury saw the game abandoned not long after.
