Dumfries Blues win the final match of the Carlisle Spring League
Dumfries Blues headed to Carlisle for an early start for the last game of the season. The game started off well for the Blues as they scored 4 goals before Penrith managed to get on the scoresheet. karen Reed and Jodie Thomson in attack were finding plenty of space and were scoring on the majority of shots. The first quarter ended with Dumfries leading 12 v 4.
The second half saw Lesley Smith introduced to the game for her debut with Dumfries Blues at Goal Keeper. The second quarter was a tighter affair with Penrith Goal Attack starting to find her range shooting. The mid court was becoming cramped with positional play of the blues disrupted by the Penrith mid court players. The quarter ended honours even with 9 goals each. The half time score was 21 v 13.
The third quarter was not up to the high standards the Blues had set earlier on and allowed Penrith back into the match, despite interceptions from Alison Groat (WD) and Megan Laverie (GD). Dumfries were still able to get shooting opportunities, however they were not able to make these counts and eventually ended the quarter only 6 goals in front, 29 v 23.
Coach Andrew Reed made changes both tactical and enforced with an injury to Megan Laverie. Skye Mcculloch was thrust into Goal Attack and this had an immediate impact with Dumfries scoring at will and at one point led the match by 13 goals, however a late surge from Penrith gave them respectability and the match finished 40 v 30.
Paula Craven Blues centre was named player of the match.
