Everyone at Dumfries Cricket Club is very sad to hear of the passing of Jerry Dawson, the long standing Honorary President of the Club last weekend.

He was a direct connection back to the club’s post war era in the 1940s. Jerry was a 1st eleven player in that period just after the war and can be seen in the team photograph for the side in 1948 (see above, front row left is J Dawson), and the players’ photograph from 1947, both of which hang in the Clubhouse.

He then moved away north to Bearsden and later to Edinburgh as a result of his work for the Inland Revenue.

Before the war his teenage years were spent in Huntly and one cricketing story of that time is that he dismissed the Duke of Edinburgh lbw in game involving the school at Gordonstoun, although he was mainly considered as a batsmen when playing senior cricket.

He can also be remembered playing occasional games for the seconds in the late fifties when he was back in Dumfries again. He also returned to the area in his later years and became actively involved with the club once more.

In 1998 he became an Honorary Vice-President of the Club and was invited to be the Honorary President from 2006. During that period he came to spectate at home games and was a regular at the Annual Club Dinner. That continued until ill-health prevented further visits to Nunholm.

The funeral is to be held on Wednesday 27th July at 11am at St George's Church and then at Roucan Loch Crematorium.
