Dunbar put the effort in and go down fighting
Dunbar welcomed league leaders Boroughmuir to Hallhill, the Edinburgh side are unbeaten this season The home side knew they would be facing their toughest challenge so far. Unfortunately more bad news had struck the colts, as backs lynchpin Matt McPhillips had been injured during the week at PACE training, and stalwart forward Ryan Silver was unavailable due to work commitments. The coaches still managed to put out a pretty formidable squad of 18 players who would do their all for the club. Good news though Jamie Crichton and Sean Bissett were both available.
Boroughmuir started strongly making some big hits and moving possession fluently through their outstanding backs, ended in 2 tries for the Meggatland outfit. The Dunbar defence seemed too static, standing too far back, instead of implementing the rush defence, perhaps if more pressure had been put on the oppositions nine and ten, Dunbar could have stopped the Boroughmuir momentum at source. Anyway take nothing away from both sides this was a very entertaining encounter full of good flowing open rugby.
Boroughmuir did give away a lot of penalties and eventually the referee penalised them by dishing out a yellow card, unfortunately the referee was very reluctant for Dunbar to take their signature quick tap, 2 pass move, allowing the Boroughmuir players to get back and set their defensive line, on numerous occassions. This was a major bone of contention for the home side.
Then out of the blue Jamie Crichton pounces on uncertainty in the away sides defence, and puts the Colts back in the game, the try is unconverted. This seemed to anger the opposition, and they came storming back scoring 2 tries, both unconverted.
With further tries from Denham Blair, Two from Ewan Patrizio and an excellent one from Kyle Laing from a well executed move plus 2 conversions from captain Antoin Penrose while Boroughmuir scored 4 more tries and 2 perfectly weighted drop kicks.
On the down side Chris Baikie was given a yellow card for dissent, making the colts already difficult job even harder.
The final score was Dunbar Colts 31 Boroughmuir Colts 54. This was a highly entertaining match with the visitors worthy winners, but take nothing away from the home side who also put a lot into this game and should be proud of their performance. For the forwards, the front five worked tiredlesly and the back row was outstanding, while the backs played some beautiful stuff. One of the main areas we need to work on is getting closer to the opposition and closing them down with a rush defence, that has to be disciplined with everyone moving up together, leaving no gaps.
This Saturday the colts are away to Murrayfield Wanderers 1 o'clock kick off leave Hallhill at 11 o'clock.
