Match Report

Dunbar U18s welcomed Livingston to Hallhil last Saturday, in the first round of the Edinburgh and District Shield. The local side also had Murrayfield Wanderers and Portobello in their group. The teams had met earlier in the season in a friendly, in which Dunbar had won comfortably, undeniably playing their best rugby of the season. The Dunbar coaches were hoping for a return to that kind of form, having suffered 3 defeats in the top 6 against very strong opposition and struggling for numbers in terms of players. Having said that, the numbers that attended the training sessions, prior to this match were very good. Dunbar welcomed back Hamish Darrah from injury and were able to field their strongest team for a while

However Livingston were on a roll in the second division, topping that section, so were in a confident mood. Their forwards had overpowered a strong BATs pack the previous week and they had lost only one game in their league.

The Dunbar line up was: 1.Thomas Osborne, 2. Denham Blair 3. Chris Baikie 4 David Brunton 5. dylan moffat 6. Jamie Crichton 7. Hamish Darrah (Vice Captain) 8. Ewan Patrizio 9. Andrew Lang 10. josh atkin 11. Connal McLeod 12 Dom Mayo 13. Antoin Penrose (Captain) 14. Kyle Laing 15. Fraser Henderson 16. Connor O'Donnell 17.Cameron Sinclair 18. Rory Brown

Dunbar U18s attack the opposition right from the start, with the ball moving through the backs, then Denham Blair making a break, a ruck forming, then swing ball back through the backs Antoin Penrose making a defence splitting run, another ruck, quick ball, Dom Mayo offloads to Jamie Crichton who dives over, great work through the backs and forwards. The try is not converted. After several phases of play where the home side kept possession intelligently, through rucking and offloading. Continually pressing forward in waves, but the brave Livingston defence holds firm, until josh atkin makes an innovative break from midfield with a clever dummy pass and sidestep, creating space for himself before going over. Some neat skill from the 10, unfortunately he couldn't make it a perfect 7, when the kick was missed. Livingston tried to get back into the game, but there was huge improvement in Dunbar's rucking and defence, and they kept the visitors out. Then when under pressure, a courageous catch and break from defence, from a treacherous bobbling ball by Kyle Laing, near to his own 5m line, carved a huge hole in the Livingston defence, who were caught out by the wingers acceleration. There was plenty support there on hand, something the coaches and players had been working on. Ewan Patrizio continued the move, went to ground delivered a lovely pop pass to Antoin Penrose who delivered a subtle textbook switch pass with Fraser Henderson the fullback, who had been with Kyle all the way. Fraser then had enough strength to shake off the last defender and get over the line. Definitely a contender for try of the season. The kick was not converted. With Dunbar now firmly ensconced on the Livingston 5 metre line, the play got a bit scrappy, as the home team seemed over eager to press home their advantage, when fortuitously the ball broke free to josh atkin, who was alert enough to capitalise on the opportunity and catch the unlucky Livingston defence off guard. The try was not converted. it was now becoming obvious that kicking practise would be high on the agenda at training this week, as those misses could prove costly in other games.

Callum Low, the Head Coach made changes at half time and during the second half, ensuring that all the squad got decent game time. Initially with the ebullient Connor O'Donnell replacing David Brunton in the second row, hoping that he would continue to spark the home side, to maintain their high performance. Connor went on to play a major part in this victory, making tackles and holding up the ball when a try seemed a certain for Livingston. David Brunton returned to the fray at hooker and Denham Blair moved to prop, with Thomas Osborne leaving the field, Thomas had been a key man in this win, being strong in the scrum also his link up play and defence. Dunbar continued to take it to the opposition, but credit to Livingston they defended resolutely and made a couple of breaks, they were unlucky not to score. Eventually Ewan Patrizio made a break through the middle, and crashed over between the posts earning a well deserved try, the kick was converted. Ewan had made a lot of gain line breaks along with other forwards Jamie Crichton, Denham Blair and especially Chris Baikie. Livingston were still proving hard to break down and did not concede ground or possession easily. Eventually Dunbar's 6th and final try arrived, again good break from Antoin out to Kyle, back from Andy Laing who had been providing quick ball from the rucks all game, back to Antoin another ruck quick ball from Andy, to Josh and finally Dom Mayo for another well worked try. After that the home side seemed to switch off, and the away team came more into the game. They never let their heads go down. Livingston deservedly broke through the Dunbar defence, scoring 2 fine tries and one conversion. Other changes made during the game were rory brown who had also played the school U16s in the morning, for the irrepressible dylan moffat, who is always in the places, where it hurts most and comes out smiling, often making a "flattering" comment to his opposite number, a true rugby gentleman. Cameron Sinclair on for Connal McLeod who had kept things tidy and tight on the wing. Thomas returned to the front row with Denham moving to back row and Hamish Darrah coming off. The return of Hamish, had definitely improved the Dunbar rucking and more aggressive defending as he always leads by example, areas they had been lacking in his absence. This was a welcome return to form for the colts, and a much needed victory. They played open attractive rugby and it paid off, all the players involved, covered all aspects of the game passing, support, rucking and tackling to a high degree. It would be churlish to criticise anything, cough goal kicking. Lets hope this continues for them, next game next Saturday at Portobello Kick off tbc. Can all players try and make Tuesday and Thursday, the coaches realise this is exam week, but they are only asking for an hour and half of your time. Well done to everyone involved.
