Dunbar v Dalkeith
Dunbar victorious again to extend their lead at top of the table
Dunbar started the match with several key players missing as was the case with Dalkeith./ Dunbar scrum half liam clutton tried to sever his leg with an axe which required 6 stitches which left him on the bench with Sandy Thomson taking over at scrum half.
Dunbar started the stronger as they looked to quickly finish the match off as a contest. With 9 minutes on the clock the Dunbar forwards rumbled to the visitor’s line and saw Greco awarded the opening try. Captain jamie peters was unsuccessful with the conversion attempt. Dalkeith came straight back at the re-start and when Dunbar spun it wide centre Peebles kick was charged down allowing Dalkeith to level the scores. Dalkeith were giving away too many penalties and it was only a matter of time before the referee sent a Dalkeith player to the bin and the unfortunate wing forward was despatched.
The Dunbar play was so disjointed with silly knock on and dropped passes affecting play.
However things started to improve when centre robert courtney burst through to give Dunbar the lead again after 23 minutes. The ball was cleared up field but Dunbat went straight on the attack before Andrew Lunam charged on to the 22 metre line. jamie peters took the ball on and fed Wightman who drove to 5 metre line. The ball went wide and centre Courtney broke through several tackles to score.Play was becoming very scrappy again with too many unforced errors creeping into the game. With 38 minutes played the home side were awarded a penalty which skipper jamie peters converted to extend their lead to 13-5.
HALF TIME
Dunbar needed to inject more pace into the game to spread their opponents wider. The breakthrough eventually came and it was to be the try of the match with Keiran Donnellan finishing off a fine backs move on 54 minutes.
Dalkeith responded when they were awarded a penalty in front of the posts which was easily converted. Dunbar then had centre Courtney yellow carded for an off the ball incident. This gave Dunbar the push they needed and it was only a matter of time before the home team extended their lead. First skipper Peters eased through the visitors defence to score. Play then came straight back up field and Dalkeith went offside but good ferereeing allowed the advantage and Richie Gallagher barged over to extend the lead to 32-8. With only a couple of minutes remaining Steve Bisset scored a great solo effort when Peters released the winger on half way and he cut inside before swallow diving over to score. Then Ian Wightman extended the lead to 46-8 as he ran in from half way to complete the scoring. The referee blew for full time.
Dunbar were presented with their league championship trophy to go along with the bowl trophy they had already won.
