Dunbar travelled to Midlothian to face a Dalkeith team they had already played and beaten this season.
With both teams not playing a senior match voids in the teams were filled with first fifteen players. Dunbar had Mitchell, Brown & Fletcher on the bench needing game time.
The game started rather rushed and with lots of enthusiasm from both sets of players. Dalkeith hit home first from a penalty on 3 minutes which was duly cancelled out on 5 minutes when Ross Charlton levelled. Dalkeith again took the lead a minute later after a Dunbar player wandered offside at the breakdown. The game settled down to a rather scrappy but exiting affair between two well matched teams. Both teams were giving away too many penalties at the breakdown as each tried to outfox the other. The referee was having a hard job and his whistle was very busy with very little fluent play.
Dunbar again took the lead on 16 minutes from a scrum which saw veteran Alan Gray cross easily to score. Charlton extended the visitors lead with an easy conversion. The game was now becoming more difficult for the referee which was down to the player’s negativity at the breakdown. With 35 minutes gone the referee went to his cards and yellow was shown to a Dalkeith forward. Dunbar again went on the offensive and were again awarded a penalty which Charlton converted to make it 13-3 to Dunbar. Dalkeith had the last say on half time with a penalty of their own to reduce the score to 13-6 at half time.
Within a minute of the restart Dunbar were also reduced to 14 men with Neil Spowart yellow carded for pulling a player back. Play really was not getting much better but it was a dour battle and really enjoyable. Dalkeith had several good chances but for some huge tackles by Fletcher who was knocking the home player’s down at every opportunity.
With both teams back to full strength it was Dunbar who again were reduced to 14 as neil Tennant was yellow carded for constant infringements on 65 minutes. From the penalty Dalkeith reduced the gap to just the one point with Dunbar just hanging in there. The visitors had a couple of kickable penalties but chose to go on the attack to no avail. Dalkeith then had the previous yellow carded player shown a straight red for over exuberance with the feet. Even with the extra man Dunbar were up against it and eventually Dalkeith scored a well worked try on 75 minutes. This was the last score and Dunbar had lost a match they should have won.
