Dunfermline S2s beat GHA
An excellent game from both sides, with Dunfermline pushed all the way
Dunfermline S2s faced our friends from GHA , a team that gave us two cracking games last season (one win apiece). This game was equally as good as the previous games.
The game started at a frenetic pace, both sides attacking strongly, with pace and width. A penalty in our own half down the right was the lauchning pad for a sweeping attack which Gregor collected down the left flank, and a neat pop out of the tackle to Kian saw him run in the first try. 3-0
The GHA halfbacks varied their play nicely, between passing moves and good use of kicks, several of which put us under a lot of pressure. However we weathered these, and put a lot of pressure ourselves on the GHA attack, with one of their attacks from a penalty thwarted inside their own 22, and Dunfermline turning the ball over at the ruck and a nice counter attack through Mackenzie's hands lead to Duncan score in the corner. 6-0
GHA were next to attack, and we made it hard for ourselves, going offside in the backline at a scrum, with GHA scoring a try from the tap penalty, and converting to close the score to 6-4.
Dunfermline responded by pressurising the restart, regaining possession. first a direct run from Gregor, then Charlie passing out of the ruck to Andrew; a fine miss pass to Cameron, who made yards and off-loaded to the looping Duncan to score down the right. 9-4
Next came a multiphase attack from a scrum on half-way - a good attack from a deeply angled line saw Kian, then Cameron, make yards, Finlee taking the attack up from the ruck and setting up a passing move to the left. Finlay S took the ball into contact and won a penalty. Another miss pass from Andrew saw Gregor go close, with Kian there to finish the move off. 13-4
Next came one of the defining moments of the match. An attack from Dunfermline down the right was halted on the GHA 10m line; Cameron's off load was intercepted, and GHA launched a counter attack which look like a certain try, save for Duncan's excellent covering tackle, then Matthew H tackling the support runner with an equally good effort. Dunfermline managed to clear their lines, with Logan K going close in the left corner before the half-time whistle sounded, and everyone could catch their breath!
Half-time Dunfermline 13 - 4 GHA
The second half was only a minute or two old before Duncan saved another certain try with a chase and tackle, but GHA continued to attack and played deep in the Dunfermline half for several phases. The pressure was rewarded with the GHA centre switching the attack following a scrum, scoring in the left corner. 13-7
Dunfermline went through a spell of straying off-side through a lack of discipline, which allowed GHA to launch an attack with led to a score through weak tackling in the centre. 13-11
Good defence from GHA from a Dunfermline attack - perhaps not attacking with the same width as earlier - saw another good counter attack, with Duncan and Gregor again chasing back to prevent the score. Dunfermline failed to clear their lines from the lineout on our 5m line, then went off-side at the scrum, then off-side at a ruck from the penalty (something we need to cut out), then GHA burst through to score to take the lead for the first time. 13-15.
Dunfermline quickly re-established their lead with Finlee finishing an attacking move. 16-15
By this stage Dunfermline had the upper hand again, finishing the stronger side. Duncan scored after Jack had come close (20-15), and Gregor scored a final try, converted by Andrew. 24-15.
One last GHA attack, met by another good tackle (from Gregor) finished an excellent game, the Dunfermline players clearly delight with their win.
Final Score: Dunfermline 24 - 15 GHA
