BHS/EHS travel to Selkirk
3 teams were away last Saturday...how did they get on?
The school fixtures last saturday saw our lads take on Selkirk and very encouragingly we had 3 teams out representing, a massive thanks must go out to the S1's who rounded up their mates to come and get involved, lets hope we can keep these numbers up for the rest of the season
The first years were always going to have a tough time of it, playing their first competitive game ever against a well drilled side saw them struggle, however with some more training and a increase in knowledge, they showed that they could be a side to be reckoned with, Selkirk were an experienced outfit and played some very good rugby,
Liam Horne scored the first try of the season for the S1's and that was to be their only score of the match, from a restart the ball was worked up field with some good work from the forwards, recycled well and then spun out to the flyer so crossed from 30m out.
Euan Feeney ran well from centre, with Spike Hardy playing a good game at scrumhalf, Mark Wilson was a thorn in the side of Selkirk all game and Billy Bradd, showed that its not just his big brother Llachlan that has pace,
at the S2 level, a game of 2 halves was definitely the way to describe the performance, as at Jed the week before, they started slowly, but increase to have a brilliant second half,
straight from the kick off an error was made and Selkirk were in under the posts, this demoralized the boys noticeably and they struggled to live with the pace and size of the Selkirk backline, however with a never say die attitude that the lads stuck in, weathered out the storm and regained some composure to score 3 quite brilliant tries,
the first came courtesy of Eyemouth flyer Lewis Middlemiss who scored his 2nd of the season after some fine recycling from the forwards and some slick hands from the backs, Duncan Hardie unlucky with the conversion, hitting the crossbar from wide out,
the 2nd try was from a length of the field interception from Duncan Hardie who had the pace...just, to cross under the sticks, a great bit of individual skill and determination, Rory Hamilton unfortunately missed the conversion attempt, however one spectator did say this about his kicking "Its Rubbish" - Finlay Hamilton...family feud?
The 3rd try was the best of the bunch and came from new winger Oscar Chapman. From a scrum in their own 22, the Berwickshire outfit opted to run out of trouble, coming to the blindside Rory Hamilton linked up well with Duncan Hardie, who showed he has more than pace with a well executed chip and catch over his opposite number before drawing the winger and setting Oscar off with 50m to go, even with confronted with 3 Selkirk men, Oscar wrong footed them all and showed a clean pair of heels for his first of the season.
If this squad could play in the first half how they play in the seconds they would be far more competitive,
Lewis Heatley defended like a demon all game in the center, as did Callum Rhind in the forwards, With Gregor Murray playing another blinder from scrum half, the side is starting to blend together and hopefully this can continue when they take on Kelso this week.
squad was from: Rob Bracken, George Smith, Callum Rhind, Arran Colvine, Joe Logan, Ross Ferguson, Adam Kinghorn, Euan Wilson, Ciaran McEwan, Billy Farmer, Gregor Murray, Rory Hamilton, Duncan Hardie, Lewis Middlemiss, Lewis Heatley, Oscar Chapman and Barnaby Bevan
The U15 put in an excellent performance and beat Selkirk scoring 6 tries in the process, this is a very good team who should be looking to compete at this age group in every game,
the whole squad tackled well and played for each other, with such a big squad it is brilliant that everyone is gelling so well and really wanting to be part of the one squad,
Zander Martin was the pick of the try scorers running in 4, a brilliant effort from the winger, with the other tries coming from Nick Tether and Ben Williams, who its great to see back after a season out with injury, with Michael Thomson kicking 2 conversions.
The Selkirk coach went on as saying "This is the first BHS/EHS team in years that has intimidated out lads, they deserved their win and they should have a good season" if these lads can stick together from now right through to Colts level they will be a brilliant young team.
Captain Patrick Anderson played well out of position at 10, with Llachlan Bradd showing good glimpses in attach, Nathan Melrose also had a strong game in both attack and defence.
the squad was from: Ben Williams, Nathan Melrose, Marcel De Seussa, Nick Tether, Aaron Wilson, Frazer Aitken, Robbie Dougal, Lewis Mclaughlan, Cammy Rogerson, Patrick Anderson, Zander Martin, Daniel Conyers, Aiden Rosie, Llachlan Bradd, Jake Cross, Euan Archibald, Ryan Wilson, Duncan Sim, Euan Goslan, Michael Thompson,Keiran Collins, Connor Hughes and Maitland Murray
