Eyemouth High school took a group of 12 girls on their first ever venture into the world of full contact rugby,
The group consisted of a wide mixture from S1 up to U18 and they did Berwickshire very proud indeed,
at U15 level, with some girls playing at the tender age of 12 against some big powerful more experienced girls from Hawick, Jed and Gala who were closing in on 15, courage and commitment was shown throughout the whole squad, especially pocket rocket Caitlyn Lauder who never gave up on a tackle or a run, running with no fear at people (literally) twice her size. Although the team didnt win a game, some very good rugby was shown and with time and effort, there is the makings of a very good young girls team at Eyemouth,
The surprise of the day came in the U18's where a straight final with Earlston was the order of the day, and some very fine rugby was shown. The game rather strangely was split into 2 halves played at opposite ends of the tournament. So there was plenty of rest time in between. the Final was played with both sets of girls knowing they would be going to the National Finals later in the month as one squad to represent the Borders. so a very friendly atmosphere was adopted...with lots of apologies being issued for tackled made and quite a bit of screaming when a pass was thrown a little harder than intended!
Eyemouth won the contest 3 tries to 2 courtesy of some strong running and a hat-trick from Rachael Lauder, also thanks to some strong defense from Zoe Burns and Ruth Minto.
Another notable award Eyemouth would have definitely been in the running for would be "Most Instantly Recognizable Team" with the snow and rain forecast, along with the wind and cold coming in, a masterstroke from Mr Macdonald seen the bright orange Duke of Edinburgh waterproofs being worn by the girls to keep warm...with many other coaches asking if we had arrived by trawler rather than a bus! Pictures are on the club website.
A great day was had by all and the plan is to continue the girls rugby into next season with the idea of building and playing full games against other teams/schools. If anyone would like anymore info on the girls squad or to join at any level please contact Mr MacDonald at Eyemouth High School or David Hutchison (club DO) on email@example.com
