Bonus point win for Duns at Portobello

Portobello 8 Duns 32

Duns travelled to Portobello for a re-arranged fixture in East Regional League Division 1, the original fixture having been postponed last October, and so this was the first meeting between the sides this season.

The match kicked off at 11.30 so that those who wished to travel to Murrayfield to watch Scotland play Italy could make it across the city in time.

Games between Duns and Portobello at Cavalry Park have in recent years been very tight and this was to prove no different although the scoreboard suggests a different story.

Duns started very well with controlled possession and good linkage between the backs and forwards. Duns pressed well but Porty stemmed the early pressure. With only three minutes on the clock the game was stopped following a bad injury to Duns wing forward Daniel Wright. Daniel was taken by ambulance to hospital and will require surgery on a neck injury. Daniel had been in great form for the seconds this season and had been rewarded with a start in the Firsts in the last two games. Everyone wishes Daniel a speedy recovery.

After the restart to the game Duns continued with good patterns of play and were rewarded with a penalty which was well converted by Dale Robertson. Midway through the first half Robertson collected his own kick ahead and won the foot race to score in the corner. The conversion was missed.

From the restart Duns huffed and puffed but were unable to add to their score. Half time and 8-0 up.

The second half started badly for Duns with a comedy of errors resulting in Porty scoring the easiest of tries. Fortunately for the visitors the conversion was missed. Further errors and indecision resulted in a Penalty for the home team which was duly converted. In five short minutes Portobello were back on terms with Duns and in the ascendency.

Duns somehow weathered the storm and gathered some composure to get back on terms. The next score came from Richard Burns who picked up at the scrum and bludgeoned his way over the line to score. Robertson added to conversion.

Back came Porty with long periods of possession and they were camped in the Duns half. At this stage the Duns coaches would probably have settled for a draw but then up popped David Hutchison to score in the corner much to the relief of the Duns support.Robertson converted well.

Two minutes later Richard Burns added his second try of the day and then with the final play of the game Chris Williamson scored to bring matters to a conclusion. A very gritty performance by Duns. Richard Burns had an excellent day with ball in hand and in the backs Ross Turner was very forceful in defence.

Iain Sim made his first team debut and understandably took a little time to find his feet, but the longer the game went on he settled in well making some good breaks.

The Duns team was :- Neil Graham; David Hutchison, Iain Sim, Stuart Thompson and Ross Turner; Dale Robertson and Danny Lamb; Scott McCraw, Cammy Hill, Andrew Connor, Duncan Budge ( captain ), Alexander Auld, Chris Williamson, Richard Burns and Daniel Wright. The replacements were Allen Whellans, James Thorburn, Scott Turnbull and Andrew Baxter.
