Duns will travel up the A9 to Inverness on saturday 21st April to take part in the Highland RFC Seven-a-Side tournament, the draw for which has been made today.
The contact with Highland was made through former Portobello scrum half Craig Little, who recently returned to his home town after a period in Edinburgh. Craig mentioned, when Duns played Portobello earlier in the season, that Highland were trying to resurrect their Sevens and the idea has snowballed from there.
Craig is now back at Highland RFC, and is convenor of their Sevens tournament.
There will be 24 teams taking part in the Sevens tournament, split initially into 8 groups of 3. Each team plays the other two teams in their group, with the bottom side entering the last 8 of the Shield and the top two sides entering the last 16 of the main Cup competition, with both the Cup and the Shield being played under the traditional knock-out format.
This means that each participating side gets at least 3 matches, with the finalists in the main Cup competition having to play no less than 6 ties of Sevens.
For that reason, squads are of 12 players rather than the usual 10 so as to allow everyone to get a well-earned breather now and again.
The draw for the group stages has bracketed Duns with Ross Sutherland Stags ( one of two sides entered by Ross Sutherland ) and Mackie Academy FP. The full group stage draw is as follows :-
Pool 1: Highland, Lochaber, Allan Glen's.
Pool 2: Kinross, Garioch, Inverness Craig Dunain.
Pool 3: Black Watch 2, Aberdeenshire, Leavemyarsealona
Pool 4: Duns, Ross Sutherland Stags, Mackie Academy FP
Pool 5: Black Watch 1, Caithness, Gordonians
Pool 6: MacKinnon’s, Highland Reds, Glenrothes
