Duns 2nd XV 39, Dunbar 2nd XV 5.
With the Hardens again unplayable the fixture was switched to the new Berwickshire High School. The pitch was heavy especially the end furthest away from the road. Duns kicked off and immediately had Dunbar on the back foot with sustained pressure in the visitors twenty two. Duns in the opening quarter had plenty of chances but lady luck and the slippery ball foiled various opportunities. In the mud Duns had to play a forward orientated game with some good support play amongst the pack.
Duns eventually opened the scoring with a great try from Steve Crawford after the forwards took a scrum against the head. The conversion was missed. Duns then had further sustained pressure, being held up twice over the line by a determined Dunbar defence. Then against the run of play Dunbar scored a very good try with a touchdown in the corner. Just before the break Duns added a further try from Martin Aitchison who crashed over from close range, Aitchison having his first run out in weeks after a lay off through injury.
The half time team talk was simple – play the rest of the game on the “green stuff” and the tries will come. Just after the restart Scott Turnbull rampaged through the Dunbar rear guard to score an opportunist try which was converted by Euan Reed. This was closely followed by a fine try from Ben Foreman who finished off a move after good handling. At this stage Duns were in total control with further tries from Martin Aitchison, Matty Taylor and Tom Swan with Euan Reed converting one.
This was a good performance from the Seconds, scoring seven tries with very difficult conditions underfoot. Scott Turnbull had a great game in the pack with some strong rampaging runs and Martin Aitchison in the back row was very effective with his link play. The pack dominated the scrum taking a good few against the head and the backs for a change had a relatively quiet day. Callum Mitchell made his debut for the Club and put in a good shift in the second row.
