Michael Reed reports from Inch Park.
Lismore 1st XV 6 Duns 1st XV 16
Saturday saw Duns on their travels with a visit to Inch Park in Edinburgh to play Lismore. On the back of a great performance last week against Trinity Accies, Duns were expected win well but this was anything but comfortable. Lismore to their credit put in a brave effort and never allowed Duns any time on the ball all afternoon.
The pitch was very heavy after some serious downpours during the week, which did not suit the normal expansive Duns style of play. Duns opened the scoring after 8 minutes with a well struck penalty from Dale Robertson after Lismore were penalised for crossing. There then followed a good spell of Duns pressure which resulted in a break from David Andrews who found winger David Hutchison in space to cross the whitewash. Robertson brought out full points to take Duns into a 10 point lead.
Duns then further extended the lead with another Robertson penalty. The next ten minutes saw Duns lose their shape and as a result of pressure from Lismore the Dingers started to make mistakes which resulted in a flurry of penalties against them. The referee then not surprisingly brought out the yellow card and sent Jamie Renton to the sin bin for deemed persistent infringement.
Half time saw Duns bring on James Thorburn and Dane Ivison. 5 minutes into the second half saw a further penalty to Lismore which was converted to give them their first points for the day. This was quickly followed by a second penalty when Duns collapsed the maul. Now at 13 – 6 Lismore had their tails up and put the visitors firmly on the back foot. Duns eventually gathered themselves and regained some composure. Robertson then added a penalty before Duns closed the game off.
Overall a poor game from Duns against a Lismore team that must take a lot of heart. This Saturday sees the league leaders visit the Hardens. Preston Lodge are unbeaten this season and hopefully the real Duns will turn up for what will be a tough encounter.
