Duns Minis at Kelso Tournament

Rounding off a successful 6 nations campaign the Duns Mini Rugby squad headed south to take part in Kelso Cougars annual mini rugby tournament last Sunday. After some last minute French style selection changes the club were able to roll out four teams, at P3, P4, P5 and P7.

The diminutive P3 Baby Bears held their own against burly opposition from Kelso , Selkirk and Gala and in a display that mirrored that of the Irish as their performance grew throughout the tournament ending up with a sterling effort against Gala that saw Callum O'Reilly squeeze over in the corner for a well deserved score.

Meanwhile the P4s without their regular coach (who was, like Shaun Edwards not able to travel with the team ) but guided by the squads elite development staff (Lloyd and Andrew) put in some impressive performances in beating Kelso and setting a stern challenge to Selkirk and Gala that netted yet another hat-trick for Finlay Hamilton, and a brace apiece for Connal Stanforth and Andrew Duff.

The P5s hit the club record books by dint of a 7 to 1 victory over Kelso and a very impressive 2 to 1 triumph over Melrose that will live long in these Dingers memory just as those Italians in Rome will dine out on their victory over the French the week before. In total the Famous Fives notched up 11 tries with Murray Watson, Mark Whitehead, William Rowley(3), Euan Rhind, Charlie Mole, Matthew Sanderson, Archie Bogle (2) and Aiden Turner all making it onto the scorer's notebook.

The P7 squad once again struggled in the higher echelons where defences tend to be better organised and it was only Jamie O'Reily who was able to break through to cross the whitewash.

The P7s get another chance to show what they are made of on Saturday when they take part in Gala RFC's annual Lofty Loughton Memorial Cup. Players please note that contrary to previous information kick off is at 11am not 10 o'clock and, as a result they need to gather at Duns RFC at 9.45 - not as stated earlier 8.45. The rest of the squad will train as usual on Sunday at 10.30 as they ready themselves for the annual visit of Dunbar and Gifford the following week. Check here for any further news and updates.
