The Duns Mini Bears welcomed local rivals Berwick and Kelso for a round robin match and their last home game of the season. Despite an icy north wind the sunny conditions lent themselves to some open running rugby and an absolute try-fest. Although Duns victories were largely restricted to the Fab Fours and the Famous Fives, the combination of greater numbers and some enhanced training courtesy of last week’s Easter Rugby Camp saw a vast improvement across all age groups.
Try scorers for the Super Sixes were stalwarts Matthew Sanderson and Murray Watson as well as a debut try for Liam Horn and a first for promising newcomer Xander Wilson.
Leading the charge for the Famous Fives were Fergus Murray (4 tries), Finlay Redpath (3), a brace each for Andrew Duff and Matthew Marwick and one for Aaron Mitchell.
The most encouraging thing across the board, but particularly for the Fab Fours, was the increased breadth of try scorers. That said the machine that is Finlay Hamilton did top the charts with eleven tries, but followed by 3 for Robbie Macintosh, 2 each for Lewis Learmonth, Rio Akpokavi and Charlie Brewis, and a try each for Liam Brown and Archie Brewis. Finally, Ben Simmonds made a cameo appearance for the Fours and came away with a first senior try before returning to his roots and scoring another for the Baby Bears. Other scorers for the wee guys were Aron Dickson and Daniel Ross.
Next week the Bears travel to Dunbar for the final match of the year. Meet at 9.30 at the club in Duns or 10.15 at Dunbar.
