Club History

Dunvant Rugby Club has been an important part of Community life in Dunvant, Killay and surrounding areas of Swansea West ever since it's foundation in 1887. Dunvant R.F.C. are extremely proud of being the first Village Club to reach the highest echelons of Welsh Rugby, Division 1 (now known as the Premiership) using mainly home grown talent, before our beloved game turned Professional.
Playing much of our early rugby in the local parks, we decided in 1969 to buy 13 acres of a local field known as "Albert's Bottoms", today proudly known as "Broadacre" where we have 3 full size pitches, some great facilities and one of the best playing surfaces in Wales. The Club joined the West Wales Rugby Union in 1978/9 in Section E, and in only 9 years rose to Section A. With the formation of League Rugby in 1990/1, Dunvant entered into Division 2 (now Div 3) and won it at the first attempt. 2 seasons later in Division 2, Dunvant won 21 out of 22 games to enter the top flight Division 1 for the 1993/4 season with the giants of Llanelli, Swansea, Cardiff etc. Across our seasons in Division 1 we beat them all except Cardiff (27-27 draw) and Llanelli . An amazing journey through 8 Divisions of rugby in only 15 years. We have even played International games against Japan in 1993 (L23-24) and Romania in 1999(L10-29).
With the advent of the Professional game, we have returned to grass roots rugby with our focus on being the centre of our Dunvant and Killay Community. On the rugby side, we no longer pay players, but are keen to develop local boys and to encourage them to develop coaching and other skills etc as their careers move on.
Our 1st XV is playing in the WRU Championship West this season, the Development XV in the Ospreys 2nd XV league A, and the Youth XV in the Ospreys Youth Premier league league. We have a strong Junior Section which fields teams at all ages from Under 5 to Under 16, and it is a fantastic sight to see some 300 boys playing rugby at Broadacre on a Sunday morning. We also host many Rugby tournaments and Cup finals during the season for the W.R.U, Ospreys, Brain's Cup etc. We even have a strong cricket side who have won the Swansea Central League for 15 of the last 18 years.
On the Community side, we have developed our Club's facilities for use within the whole Community. The Lounge recently underwent a £30,000 refurbishment and is used by many local organizations for meetings, seminars and training courses. The Players Lounge and our large Main Bar are also available for functions, parties, dances etc. A wide range of buffets and hot meals can also be provided. Our outdoor facilities are used daily by Bikeability, a Charity for the disabled enabling them to learn to ride bicycles in a safe off road environment and to use the Clyne Cycle Track which adjoins the Club.
So why not come down to Broadacre and enjoy the Dunvant experience
