Dunvant welcomed Cardiff Met who on their last visit to Broadacre in 2003 went home with a 25-25 draw. With the Met sitting in 9th place with 3 wins but 4 consecutive defeats it was likely to be a finely balanced contest with Dunvant sitting at the bottom of the table with a solitary home win and 6 consecutive defeats. Kick off was delayed for 30 minutes due to M4 traffic problems for the visitors and then a 1 minute silence was held in memory of the tragic loss of life in the Aberfan disaster of 50 years ago, every National League game in Wales doing the same.
Dunvant had to make a late team change with flanker Rhys Tucker pulling out with a broken hand, Mark Loughlin moving off the bench to No 8 and Adam Gregory coming onto the bench. Met kicked off towards the Dunvant end and both sides were probing the others defences which held firm. The first scoring opportunity came on 10 minutes with a penalty kick for Dunvant 35 metres out which No 10 James Davies slotted for a 3-0 lead. James was onh the score sheet again 4 minutes later when he jinked through Met’s defence in their 22 to score under the posts, converting his own try for 10-0. Met responded with some lively runs and on 18 minutes wing Ashley Taylor scored out wide with Alex Seer’s conversion attempt clattering the post and bouncing in off for 10-7. Dunvant restarted and with advantage being played for a knock on on the right hand side of Met’s 10 metre line, the ball was passed through several hands to the left hand side of the pitch for lock forward Tom Falvey to score in the left hand corner, James Davies converting for 17-7.On 26 minutes A Dunvant lineout on our 10 metre line was not straight, Met opted for their own lineout throw and set up a rolling maul which advanced to our 22. Dunvant were penalised and a quick tap penalty got the ball out to wing Ashley Taylor to score his second try in the right hand corner, converted by Seers for 17-14. From the restart Dunvant were straight up to the other end and won a penalty just under the posts giving James Davies an easy kick to extend the lead to 20-14. That was followed by Dunvant Captain, playing today at inside centre with Danny Davies out injured making a superb break to go over in the left hand corner and managing to run across under the posts to give James an easy conversion for 27-14. Met had the final say on the stroke of half-time with a penalty kick almost from the halfway line with Seers successful for a half time score of Dunvant 27 Cardiff Met 17.
Like at Pontypool a few weeks ago it looked as if the game was finely balanced at half time with either side in chance of victory. Just like that game the hosts blew away the visitors in the second half without them scoring again. From Dunvant’s restart a terrific break by James Davies got the ball out to full back Adam Williams-Parry whose blistering pace took him over for our 4th try and bonus point,James converting for 34-17. Mitchell Ford repeated the favour with his own break for Adam to score his second try in the right hand corner, James again converting for 41-17. A fabulous break from our own 10 metre line saw wing Kieron Jones fly all the way virtually unchallenged, this time James’ conversion was wide so 46-17. On 57 minutes Dunvant pack mauled up to the line to score, the try initially given to prop Sam martin but later awarded to |NO 8 Mark ‘Pup’ Loughlin, James converting for 53-17. Then a repeat with Pup scoring again, James converting for 60-17 and James Davies also being announced as the Dunvant Rugby Club Singers Dunvant Man of the Match. On 75 minutes outside centre Sam Crowley scored our 9th try in the left hand corner, this time James missing the conversion for 65-17. The final and 10th try came in injury time with hooker Ceri Davies scoring, James converting for a final score of 72-17 to the delight of the Broadacre faithful, James Davies finishing with a tally of 27 points, 1 try, 2 penalties and 8 (out of 10) conversions. Surprisingly this was not Dunvant’s highest score or highest winning margin of 2016. On 18th March 2016 Dunvant beat Tenby by 85-39, the highest score but winning margin of 46. On 16th April 2016 Dunvant beat Llanelli Wanderers by 77-12, a winning margin of 65.
This much needed victory in the Championship moves Dunvant up to 9th place with 13 points and next weekend we travel to Glamorgan Wanderers in 11th place with 11 points so everything to play for in Cardiff.
Elsewhere our 2nd XV saw host’s Gorseinon kick a last gasp penalty to snatch a 22-22 draw in the SD league whilst our Youth went down at home to Mumbles 17-23 in the 1st round of the SD Cup.
