Dunvant paid dearly losing a 16-5 lead and 2 yellow cards reducing us to 13 men for the last 6 minutes to see Skewen snatch victory 16-19 at the death

Dunvant were really keen to win this Brain’s Cup Semi Final, not only because victory gets you to the cup final, but because so far this season Skewen had had the edge over Dunvant, drawing 10-10 at Broadacre and then winning 21-14 at Skewen in two extremely competitive games.

Dunvant kicked off, and for a while both sides resorted to a kicking game, with Skewen keeping
Dunvant pegged mainly in their own half. The first penalty kick at goal went to Dunvant but outside half Richard Lewis was wide. Dunvant then kicked ahead and made a great break but the ball was just in touch. With fine rain making the ball greasy, there were several knock ons from both sides. Skewen failed with a penalty kick at goal on 7 minutes. On 19 minutes, Dunvant almost scored a try but were held up by some scrambled defence, but a minute later full back Adam Williams-Parry made one of his trademark runs to score, converted by Richard Lewis for a 7-0 lead. On the half hour a fracas on Dunvant’s 22 saw one player from each side sent to the bin for the remainder of the half.
With two minutes of the half remaining, Skewen scrum half was at last pinged for offside after several other similar moments and Richard Lewis’s penalty kick gave Dunvant a half time lead of 10-0
Skewen restarted the second half with both teams back to 15 apiece, and Skewen had a good period of pressure with Dunvant defence holding firm. Eventually, Dunvant failed to gather a ball on their 10 metre line and Skewen picked it up to run 40 yards to score, the conversion attempt failing for 10-5. Skewen were penalised at the restart and Richard Lewis extended the lead to 13-5, then Dunvant thought they were over, but were awarded a penalty for Richard Lewis to add another kick for 16-5 and looking comfortable. On the hour, Skewen were penalised for going over the top but this time Richard Lewis failed. On 70 minutes a massive rolling maul by Skewen’s pack then saw a great break for Skewen to score and convert for 16-12 . With 6 minutes to go, Dunvant panicked and conceded two yellow cards in 2 minutes, after another player had almost been binned moments earlier for a shoulder tackle. With Dunvant down to 13 men, Skewen’s pack took control and with one minute to go broke Dunvant’s hearts with plenty of space to break through to run between the posts for an easy conversion. Final score Dunvant 16 Skewen 19
Skewen now go on to play Llandovery in the final, and with 2 games in hand in the league are in pole position to finish above Dunvant who have completed all their fixtures.
