This was the 3rd meeting between our clubs this season. Back in September Waun visited Broadacre in the league winning 5-9 and a week later returned to play us in the Swalec Plate, Dunvant winning 32-23.For today’s game Dunvant were in 6th place with Waun 4 points behind in 8th and keen to make home advantage count. Dunvant however had other ideas. Shortly after kick off, Dunvant had their first penalty kick at goal from 27 metres out in front of goal but Adam’s kick fell just short. Both sides were sending long kicks back up field and on 8 minutes a kick up field from Waun was caught by Dunvant full back Mitchell Ford on our 10 metre line and a great run by Mitch saw flanker Mike Sully go over near the right hand corner with Adam’s conversion attempt bouncing back off the posts for 0-5. On 12 minutes, Waun had a penalty on our 10 metre line, marched forward by the ref for chopsing to the 22 and Waun winger Lee Evans kicked the goal for 3-5. Dunvant attacked again and with a penalty available and no advantage gained were brought back to the mark where outside half Richard Lewis kicked the goal for 3-8. Waun missed a penalty kick at goal from just outside our 22 and then with a good period of pressure from Waun near our try line, Dunvant turned over the ball, tried to run it out instead of booting it clear, conceded a penalty and Lee Evans kicked it for 6-8
Then, % minutes before half time Dunvant had a lineout on Waun’s 5 metre line, won the ball cleanly and worked the ball across to Mike Sully who went over for his second try . Richard Lewis failed with the conversion so the score of 6-13 remained the score at half time.
On 46 minutes Waun lock forward Dan Moyle was yellow carded and Dunvant took advantage of the extra man. From our 10 metre line, centre Tom Williams made a break, passed to right wing Tom Davies who took the ball out to the 22 and then the ball was worked all the way across the pitch and out of nowhere left wing Adam Williams-Parry showed his pace to run over and score in the left hand corner. The conversion failed but Dunvant were now leading 6-18. On 55 minutes Dunvant had a number of scrums in front of the posts and eventually the penalty was won which scrum half Aled Lewis kicked to extend the lead to 6-21 and then shades of our Bonymaen game started to appear.
Dunvant had a great chance of a fourth bonus point try when a kick upfield by Richard Lewis saw wing Tom Davies break through with 6 men to 2, only to hear the ref blow up as he had been in front of the kicker. On 63 minutes Waun took a quick tap penalty on the halfway line and with 5 phases of play scored a try, converted by Lee Evans for 13-21. On 72 minutes Waun scored again with an unconverted try to bring themselves within one score at 18-21. Were we going to lose it again? Aled Lewis tried to extend the score on 75 minutes with a penalty kick from just outside our 10 metre line but was wide and Dunvant supporters nerves were jangling. What a relief when the ref blew the final whistle. Dunvant move up into 5th place with this win, our home grown boys doing us proud once again, only 2 of today’s line up are not home grown.
Next up for Dunvant is a home game against 12th placed Cwmllynfell next weekend.
